President Donald Trump has approved a new U.S. counterterrorism strategy, prioritizing the elimination of drug cartels in the Western Hemisphere. This announcement, made by the White House, comes months after a revised national security strategy, which identified the hemisphere as a focal area of U.S. foreign policy.

In a 16-page document, Trump emphasized that the U.S. would not allow cartels, jihadists, or any supportive governments to act against American citizens without facing consequences. He pointed out that no form of terrorism would be tolerated, whether it originates at home or abroad.

Trump's administration has implemented aggressive measures aimed at reshaping the geopolitical landscape of the region. This includes efforts to remove Nicolás Maduro from power in Venezuela, a series of military operations against drug boats operated by cartels in international waters, and intensified pressure on the Cuban government.

Sebastian Gorka, the White House's counterterrorism czar who led the development of the new strategy, highlighted a troubling statistic: drug cartels have caused far greater American casualties than U.S. military engagements since World War II. Gorka stated that the administration is committed to restricting the funding of cartels and tracking their drug trafficking operations to prevent the deaths of Americans on a large scale.

This new focus on counterterrorism reflects the administration's ongoing commitment to honing its foreign policy towards the Western Hemisphere despite facing global crises. The strategy also includes a systematic approach to decimate Islamic militant groups that pose operational threats to the United States and aims to neutralize violent secular political groups deemed anti-American, and those that support radical ideologies.

Since early September, the Trump administration has engaged in military actions mainly targeting drug-trafficking vessels, resulting in the deaths of at least 191 individuals. In addition, Trump has sought to encourage regional leaders to collaborate more closely with the U.S. in addressing the threats posed by these cartels and transnational gangs, which he describes as significant threats to national security within the hemisphere.

Future discussions with allied nations regarding counterterrorism strategies are planned, with Gorka emphasizing the importance of partnership. He stated that the U.S. will gauge the commitment of its allies by their contributions to collaborative efforts in combating terrorism and other threats.

Overall, the administration's focus on drug cartels as a primary concern highlights a shift in counterterrorism priorities, aiming to enhance domestic security against escalating drug-related violence and organized crime in the Americas.
