Durham Regional Police have charged a 23-year-old employee of Durham College, Manu Sugunakumar, in connection with allegations of luring two young girls into sending sexually explicit material online. The victims, aged 12 and 13, were allegedly targeted through social media platforms including Reddit and Snapchat.
According to the investigators, Sugunakumar operated under the usernames "DeliveryNormal7189" on Reddit and "manu041.01" on Snapchat. These accounts were used to engage with the minors, leading them to transmit what the authorities describe as "sexual abuse and exploitation materials."
In an effort to apprehend the suspect, the Internet Child Exploitation Unit executed a search warrant at Sugunakumar's residence located in Whitby, Ontario, in 2026. During this operation, law enforcement officials seized multiple electronic devices. Sugunakumar was located on the premises and was taken into custody without any resistance, as stated in a Durham Regional Police release.
In light of the allegations and Sugunakumar's role as an employee at Durham College, police officials have expressed concern that there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward.
Manu Sugunakumar faces a range of charges, including: luring a person under 16 to facilitate sexual assault, luring a person under 16 to facilitate sexual interference, and luring a person under 18 to facilitate the creation of child sexual abuse and exploitation material, among others. The specific details and full list of charges can be referenced through the Durham Regional Police's official communications.
It is important to note that these charges have not yet been tested in a court of law, and Sugunakumar is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The case underscores the serious nature of online exploitation and the ongoing concerns regarding the safety of minors in digital spaces.
