WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Senator Mitch McConnell was admitted to a hospital on Sunday, as confirmed by his spokesperson, David Popp. While the details surrounding his hospitalization remain unclear, Popp stated that McConnell, 84, is receiving excellent care. The announcement did not specify whether the Kentucky lawmaker is receiving treatment in Washington, his home state, or elsewhere.

McConnell, who served as the longest-serving Senate leader in history, stepped aside from that position while completing his final term, which will end in January. His health has been under scrutiny for several years due to various incidents he has faced, prompting concerns regarding his well-being.

In December 2024, McConnell fell and sprained his wrist while leaving a Republican luncheon. More recently, he was hospitalized in March 2023 with a concussion after another fall in a hotel in Washington. During the summer of the same year, he experienced two episodes where he appeared to freeze during press conferences, staring vacantly ahead until colleagues and staff came to assist him.

McConnell's medical history includes having polio during his early childhood, which he has recognized as a factor contributing to his difficulties with walking and climbing stairs as an adult. In addition to the notable falls in recent years, he also tripped and fell at his home in Kentucky in 2019, resulting in a fractured shoulder that required surgery.

The senator was first elected to the Senate in 1984. Over his lengthy career, McConnell has served as the Republican leader from 2007 until last year, holding both majority and minority leader roles throughout that time. Despite his health challenges, he remains active in the Senate, attending sessions and participating in public hearings. He currently holds the position of chairman for the Senate Appropriations subcommittee on defense, where he has been actively grilling officials regarding defense funding and policies.

In navigating the Capitol, McConnell has occasionally utilized a wheelchair, a testament to the ongoing challenges he faces regarding mobility. He is regularly accompanied by a security detail, which is customary for former congressional leaders, ensuring his safety while attending to his duties. As one of the pivotal figures in American politics, McConnell's health developments warrant attention as they may have implications not only for his role but also for the broader legislative agenda.
