U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced on July 2 that Khvicha Chalisuri, a 63-year-old Canadian citizen originally from Georgia, has been charged with alien smuggling, a grave offense that entails a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison along with a potential fine of $250,000. This serious allegation highlights the ongoing challenges authorities face in managing border security and immigration laws.
In connection to the case, a second individual, Alexandru-Stefanita Iordache, a 34-year-old Romanian national residing in Canada, was also apprehended. Iordache faces charges for eluding examination or inspection by immigration officers, a violation that carries a maximum penalty of six months in prison. The involvement of both individuals in this incident underscores the complexity of cross-border smuggling activities.
Details of the Alleged Smuggling Attempt at the Peace Bridge
The events leading to the charges occurred in the early morning hours of June 24, 2026. Chalisuri arrived at the Peace Bridge Port of Entry, driving a commercial truck and seeking entry into the United States. During the inspection process, U.S. border officers inquired whether there was anyone else inside the vehicle. Chalisuri allegedly responded negatively, claiming no other individual was present.
As part of the routine checks, the truck was subjected to an X-ray scan. During this examination, border officers identified an anomaly that suggested the presence of a person standing in the sleeper compartment of the cab. Subsequently, the individual was removed from the truck and identified as Iordache, leading to further investigations.
Upon inquiry, investigators determined that Iordache lacked the necessary authorization to enter the United States and was seemingly attempting to cross the border unlawfully. The discovery of a hidden individual within a commercial vehicle not only raises serious legal issues but also emphasizes the ongoing threats posed by smuggling operations across international borders.
