A tragic incident occurred in Scarborough on Friday afternoon, resulting in the deaths of two pedestrians after being struck by a vehicle. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene at the intersection of Birchmount Road and Lawrence Avenue East just before 2 p.m.

According to reports from the police, the accident was initiated when a 79-year-old woman driving a purple Toyota failed to stop for a red light at the intersection. The vehicle collided with a 55-year-old woman driving a grey Mitsubishi before veering off and hitting the two pedestrians who were standing on the north-west sidewalk.

Emergency medical services confirmed that the two pedestrians, a 64-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman, were pronounced dead at the scene. The tragic loss of life has prompted police to begin formal procedures to contact the families of the deceased, with Duty Inspector Errol Watson providing updates to the media.

In addition to the fatalities, the accident also resulted in injuries to people involved in the vehicles. Reports indicate that three occupants of the purple Toyota, including two women and a six-year-old girl, sustained minor injuries and were transported to the hospital for medical evaluation. The female driver of the Mitsubishi was also taken to the hospital, though her injuries were classified as non-life-threatening.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing. Traffic Services have been tasked with piecing together the events leading up to the collision, and Officer Watson has appealed to the public for assistance. Anyone who may have information or dashcam footage of the incident is encouraged to come forward and contact the police as part of the investigation.

Due to the severity of the incident, the intersection of Birchmount Road and Lawrence Avenue East is expected to remain closed for several hours as investigators gather evidence and assess the scene. The community is left to grapple with the consequences of this unfortunate event, raising further questions about road safety and pedestrian protection in the area.
