NABLUS, West Bank (AP) — Over the course of a single night and into Saturday, the Israeli military reported the detention of more than 70 suspects in the occupied West Bank. This action followed recent violence that resulted in the death of two Israeli soldiers and four Palestinian villagers, prompting increased military presence in the area, particularly in the village of Tell.
In the aftermath of Friday's clashes, Israeli soldiers remained active in Tell, where the confrontations had escalated. Reports from Palestinian sources indicated that the armed forces conducted extensive searches, including raids on a hospital in Nablus, an area notorious for its violence. Ghassan Barkat, the director of Nablus Specialty Hospital, stated that more than 50 military personnel entered the hospital, causing distress among patients and staff. During the raid, soldiers reportedly detained and insulted hospital workers while arresting a severely injured man, Ali Hussein Ali Ramadan. Barkat condemned the incidents, emphasizing that such actions should not occur in a healthcare facility, especially with women and children present.
While Israel's military made no specific mention of the hospital raid, it claimed that over 300 locations were searched during their operations, aiming to apprehend alleged affiliates of Hamas, arms traffickers, and other suspects categorized as "terrorists." The details surrounding Friday's events remain murky, but local Palestinian officials and Israeli media suggested that a group of Israeli settlers entered Tell and triggered a confrontation with residents who were concerned about a potential attack. The village is designated as off-limits to Israelis under the Oslo Accords.
The Palestinian Health Ministry reported that four Palestinian individuals were shot and killed by Israeli soldiers in Tell, while the Israeli military confirmed the death of two soldiers—one being a settler affiliated with a local defense squad. In addition, two Israelis and four additional Palestinians sustained injuries during the violence. On Saturday, reports indicated that the Israeli military apprehended a further 11 suspects in Tell alone, with overall arrests exceeding 80 across the West Bank. Amin Shuman, president of the Palestinian higher commission for the affairs of prisoners, remarked that these detentions seemed designed to impose collective punitive measures on Palestinians in retaliation for the previous day's incidents.
In connection with escalating tensions, another incident unfolded in the West Bank village of Susya. Israeli civilians and Palestinians reportedly clashed, resulting in mutual rock-throwing and the temporary theft of a soldier's weapon, which was later recovered.
Simultaneously, Israeli airstrikes in Gaza claimed the lives of at least four Palestinians and injured around 15 others. Airstrikes in Khan Younis resulted in two fatalities, while additional strikes in Jabaliya and Gaza City caused further casualties, including the death of a police force director. Strikes were also reported near Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, where 10 people were injured, leading to chaotic scenes as critically injured individuals were rushed into the medical facility.
The Israeli military stated that their strikes targeted Hamas militants, asserting that ongoing militant attacks on Israeli forces necessitated such responses. Despite a fragile ceasefire established in October following two years of conflict between Israel and Hamas, tensions remain high as airstrikes continue. According to Gaza's Health Ministry, these military actions have resulted in over 1,191 Palestinian casualties since the ceasefire.
