On Saturday night, a tragic incident occurred at Berlin's renowned Pride festival, Christopher Street Day, when a van drove into a crowd of people, resulting in the death of one individual and injuring at least 16 others. The police acted swiftly, canceling the celebrations and a concert just hours after they had commenced.
Berlin police reported they have identified a suspect linked to Islamic groups within the German capital, but he has not yet been arrested. Police spokesman Florian Nath stated, “The suspect is known to police. He is known to us as a member of Islamic circles here in Berlin, and our search for this person is proceeding at full speed.” However, Nath refrained from disclosing the suspect's name and emphasized that the authorities currently lack information regarding the individual’s motives, the sequence of events, or his precise involvement in the incident.
According to police, the incident unfolded around 10 p.m. when a white van veered into Tiergarten park, striking festival-goers before colliding with a tree. Specific details on the number of officers deployed at the scene were not disclosed but were described as “definitely a lot of police.” In total, more than 2,200 police officers had been on duty throughout Berlin since Saturday morning to safeguard the pride parade and other LGBTQ+ events.
As emergency response teams addressed the situation, police conducted witness interrogations at the park. There were preliminary accounts suggesting that, in addition to the vehicle incident, some victims may have sustained stab wounds, but officials cautioned that it was too early to make definitive conclusions about those claims.
Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner expressed his shock at the horrific event, stating, “Following a peaceful and vibrant pride parade, the rally for a tolerant and peaceful Berlin was attacked in the most brutal manner.” He further highlighted, “This is an attack on our free and cosmopolitan society,” and assured the public that the police and security authorities would work diligently to investigate the incident.
Authorities have urged potential witnesses to come forward, asking anyone with video footage or photographs taken during the event to share them with police. Additionally, a crisis hotline has been activated for individuals seeking information about missing friends or family members.
Pride celebrations in Berlin attracted hundreds of thousands of attendees, marking it as one of the largest LGBTQ+ events in Europe. Unfortunately, the festivities in front of the iconic Brandenburg Gate had to be called off around 10:15 p.m. shortly after the incident, with an ongoing performance by a band being disrupted. Event organizers encouraged attendees to leave and advised against routing through the park.
Prior to this tragic outbreak of violence, the festival had unfolded peacefully, with participants marching through the city, dancing to music, and celebrating proudly among around 80 participating floats. Julian Miethig, who had been enjoying the LGBTQ+ party at the Brandenburg Gate earlier, recounted that he had intended to attend an afterparty when he received alarming news from a friend about the unfolding chaos involving numerous fire trucks and emergency vehicles. Shocked by the reality of such a violent occurrence amidst the festival’s celebration, he remarked, “It’s a dark day for the community.”
