On Sunday evening, a tragic shooting during the annual Bite of Seattle food festival near the Space Needle resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to five others, including a 2-year-old child. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. as the festival, which is known for attracting hundreds of food and retail vendors alongside various performers, was drawing to a close.
According to Grace Nuñez, a spokesperson for the Seattle Fire Department, two victims were pronounced dead at the scene. Five additional people were transported to Harborview Medical Center for treatment, with a 56-year-old woman reported to be in serious condition. Among the injured were also a 2-year-old boy, a 23-year-old man, and a 39-year-old woman, all in stable condition, while a 40-year-old woman sustained minor injuries. Hospital spokesperson Susan Gregg noted that the victims had injuries to their arms, abdomens, or legs.
In response to the shooting, a large contingent of police and emergency crews arrived at the scene to secure the area surrounding the expansive Seattle Center events campus. Authorities haven't yet disclosed the precise location of the gunfire within the event, which featured both outdoor and indoor spaces. The local police department is actively investigating the situation and has requested that the public avoid the area, while the governor of Washington, Bob Ferguson, has been receiving briefings and deployed State Patrol SWAT officers to assist.
Governor Ferguson expressed his condolences, stating, “My prayers are with the families of the victims and the responders as they work to keep people safe.” Witnesses at the festival recounted chaotic scenes following the gunfire. Faith Adia Hunter shared that she and her friends had just purchased food when they heard the shots. Realizing the danger, they ran into a nearby building amidst the crowd seeking safety.
Many vendors hurriedly left their food stands in the frenzy. Hours later, some could be seen outside the police cordon, anxiously waiting to retrieve their abandoned tents, food, and cooking equipment. Roberto Ramirez, a vendor at the event, described the moment he heard sounds resembling firecrackers before the crowd began to panic and flee upon realizing there was an active shooter.
Estan Wakonabo, another festival-goer, narrated how he was waiting in line for a photo booth when he felt a sudden push from behind, prompting him to turn around and witness the mass exodus of people trying to escape. He described the scene as one of sheer chaos, stating, “People were hiding, pushing, and falling on the ground.” He reported hearing distinct gunshots that confirmed the presence of a shooter.
The Bite of Seattle festival, which commenced in 1982, typically draws around 350,000 attendees over three days, celebrating the vibrancy of food, drink, and community. This year's festival, unfortunately, became the site of a tragic event that has left the community in shock and mourning.
