A lawyer named Sudine Riley has accused police officers in the Durham region of assaulting her during an incident at an Oshawa, Ontario courthouse earlier this year. The incident reportedly occurred in January when Riley was in a courthouse interview room carrying out her professional duties.
According to the allegations made by Riley, uniformed officers from the Durham Regional Police Service confronted her about her presence in the interview room, which escalated to physical violence. She claimed that the officers slammed her head onto a desk and placed their knees on her back and neck. Furthermore, she stated that she was handcuffed, her head scarf was forcibly removed, and the encounter left her suffering from bleeding and swelling.
Following these serious accusations, an investigation was conducted by York Regional Police. However, on Wednesday, it was announced that they found no sufficient grounds to file criminal charges against the officers involved in the incident. The Durham Regional Police Service has since referred the matter to the Law Enforcement Complaints Agency (LECA) to evaluate if any misconduct occurred during the incident.
Atrisha Lewis, who serves as Riley's legal counsel, expressed disappointment regarding the lack of criminal charges and emphasized that no lawyer should endure such treatment. Lewis pointed out that Black lawyers, in particular, should be able to perform their work in the courtroom without the threat of violence or assault.
Riley has requested access to video footage of the incident but has reportedly not received any materials or had the chance to review any recordings related to the event, as stated by Lewis in a public statement.
