A special weather statement has been issued for Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) as rainfall warnings are currently in effect for Cottage Country. According to Environment Canada, the rainfall is anticipated to begin late Saturday and extend into Sunday.
The statement indicates, “Showers and thunderstorms will repeatedly move through the region. Localized heavy rainfall is possible for areas that receive multiple thunderstorms.” Some regions might experience rainfall accumulations of up to 50 millimeters. Additionally, there is a high likelihood of water pooling on roads and in low-lying areas, leading to reduced visibility at times.
This special weather statement covers a broad region that includes all of Toronto, Hamilton, Halton, Peel, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, and Markham, as well as Pickering, Oshawa, and Southern Durham Region to the east.
In Niagara, the weather statement has been escalated to a warning, with local rainfall amounts expected to surpass 50 millimeters. This development emphasizes the potential for significant weather impacts in the area.
In the meantime, regions within Cottage Country, including Barrie, Orillia, Collingwood, Meaford, Kincardine, Burk's Falls, Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, Parry Sound, Bancroft, and Haliburton, are currently under a yellow rainfall warning. Environment Canada has predicted rainfall totals ranging from 50 to 80 millimeters in these areas.
Meteorologist Carl Lam from 680 NewsRadio has noted that the rain is expected to intensify in the later afternoon. Due to the high moisture content in the atmosphere, there is significant potential for thunderstorms to develop, which could lead to substantial rainfall in a short time frame. This situation poses a risk of flooding in certain locations.
