HOUSTON — The Toronto Blue Jays have finalized a trade, sending outfielder Daulton Varsho to the Houston Astros. In addition to Varsho, the Blue Jays will provide cash considerations in the deal. In return, Toronto will receive right-handed pitcher Spencer Arrighetti.

With this trade, Varsho could be included in the Astros lineup as early as Monday when they face off against the Blue Jays. Varsho, a pending free agent, has spent the last three and a half seasons with Toronto, during which he established himself as one of baseball's premier center-field defenders.

Acquired before the 2023 season in a trade that involved Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Gabriel Moreno, Varsho positively impacted both the outfield and offense for the Blue Jays. Recognized for his defensive prowess, he won a Gold Glove Award in 2024 and made several highlight-reel catches throughout his tenure in Toronto.

On the offensive side, Varsho showcased his power as a left-handed hitter, achieving the 20-home run milestone twice during his time with the Blue Jays. Notably, he also shined in the postseason, hitting three home runs, two of which came in Game 2 of the 2025 American League Division Series against the New York Yankees and one in Game 1 of the 2025 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

However, Varsho's performance has diminished during the 2026 season. He has recorded only seven home runs and holds a .682 OPS so far this year. Defensively, metrics indicate a decrease in his athletic abilities, with his sprint speed dropping from the 77th percentile to the 50th percentile and his defensive range declining from the 95th to the 86th percentile.

If the Blue Jays had retained Varsho, they would have had the option to extend him a qualifying offer for 2027. This strategy could have positioned them for potential draft pick compensation if he chose to decline the offer. However, this trade indicates that the Blue Jays favored acquiring a prospect over the potential of making a qualifying offer to Varsho.

Following Varsho's departure, the Blue Jays might address their center-field needs by utilizing a combination of Myles Straw and Nathan Lukes for the remainder of the season. The center-field position is considered an area of need as Toronto prepares for the upcoming offseason.

In return, Spencer Arrighetti, currently on the injured list due to right foot nerve irritation, has shown promise when active this season. He has a 4.60 ERA and 1.34 WHIP while striking out 87 batters over 88 innings across 17 starts. Over his career in Major League Baseball, which spans 53 appearances, Arrighetti holds a 4.66 ERA and a 1.386 WHIP.
