Toronto Police have reported a concerning scam that has affected numerous individuals, ultimately leading them to unwittingly purchase expensive cellphones, smartwatches, and tablets for their deceivers. Between October 2021 and July 2026, several victims have stepped forward with similar accounts of being contacted by individuals impersonating representatives of legitimate cellphone providers.
Investigators have revealed that these callers often possess specific details about the victim’s actual account and billing information, which adds an element of credibility to their deceptive tactics. The scam typically begins with the caller offering heavily discounted or even free devices, claiming that these exclusive deals are available only to loyal customers.
To reinforce their scheme, the caller guides the victim through the process of placing a seemingly legitimate order via the official cellphone provider’s website or app. This initial step appears genuine, creating a false sense of security for the victim. However, the true nature of the scam reveals itself soon after the ordered item is delivered to the victim’s home.
Once the delivery has been made, the scam unfolds further when a supposed employee contacts the victim with a fabricated story that a mistake has occurred—such as the wrong model being sent. The scammer convinces the victim that they will send the correct item but first requires the victim to return the mistakenly delivered product. To facilitate this, the scammer either emails or mails the victim a pre-paid shipping label.
The address on this shipping label is often a random or unrelated third-party address, effectively disconnecting the victim from the true destination. The item is then sent back by the victim, only to be secretly collected by the scammer from the provided address, usually without the homeowner’s knowledge or consent. In many instances, the homeowner is completely unaware that any parcel was delivered to their location.
Moreover, in some scenarios, the scammer may enlist the services of a legitimate courier company to retrieve the item, further complicating the victim’s understanding of the incident. Ultimately, the victims find themselves financially responsible for the cellphone and associated phone plan they believed they legitimately ordered through a credible source.
This elaborate scheme has highlighted the importance of awareness and vigilance among consumers regarding unsolicited communications, particularly those that involve sensitive account information. Authorities urge individuals to be skeptical of offers that seem too good to be true, especially when unsolicited contact is involved. Victims are encouraged to verify any claims with their actual service provider before proceeding with any transactions.
