York Regional Police investigators are actively seeking to identify multiple suspects connected to a series of arson attacks that targeted the same business in Richmond Hill. The incidents drew considerable attention due to their alarming nature and the apparent pattern emerging from the attacks.
The first arson incident occurred on August 19, 2023, at approximately 5:15 a.m. In this event, a black Honda Accord was observed arriving at a plaza located at the intersection of Leslie Street and East Wilmot Street. The passenger of the vehicle was seen smashing the front door of a commercial business before entering the premises carrying a red jerry can. Shortly after, witnesses reported seeing the suspect fleeing the scene, followed by an explosion and visible flames emanating from the building. Investigators later confirmed that the sedan used in the escape had been stolen in Toronto.
Just two days later, on August 21, 2023, at around 5:20 a.m., investigators were alerted to a second incident which occurred under similar circumstances. On this occasion, two suspects arrived at the same plaza, but this time in a dark-coloured SUV. The passenger once again approached the business with a red jerry can, where he poured gasoline near the entrance and ignited it. After this act of arson, the suspects fled the scene in the SUV, which was later determined to have also been stolen from Toronto, indicating a disturbing trend in the attacks.
The third incident unfolded on August 26, 2023, at approximately 3:15 a.m. Three suspects arrived at the same business in a black SUV, demonstrating that the pattern of targeting this specific establishment was continuing. During this event, two of the passengers were seen smashing the front window before entering the building with jerry cans and setting a fire. Following the act, the suspects returned to the SUV and fled. Investigators discovered that this vehicle was displaying stolen license plates, which had been taken from another vehicle in Ajax.
In light of these repeated attacks, police have released video footage from the third incident in an effort to gather more information from the public. The authorities emphasized that in each case, the business was unoccupied, and fortunately, no injuries were reported despite the dangerous nature of the arson.
The investigations are ongoing as police look for potential leads that could help identify the suspects involved in these reckless acts. The community is being urged to come forward with any information that may assist in solving this troubling series of incidents.
