DeSantis Withdraws Execution Warrant for Inmate

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has made headlines by withdrawing a death warrant for the first time since taking office. This decision came just days before the execution of William Lee Thompson, who was scheduled to die by lethal injection in what is considered the nation's busiest death chamber. The execution was set for Tuesday, following Thompson's conviction for the 1976 murder and kidnapping of Sally Ivester.

Despite DeSantis's history of aggressively utilizing the death penalty during his final term, he signed a letter on Thursday to officially retract the death warrant for the 74-year-old inmate. In contrast, another execution scheduled for the same day is still on track to proceed. James Robertson, 63, is set to be executed after pleading guilty to first-degree murder, having waived all his appeals related to the 2008 strangling of Frank Hart while both were cellmates at Charlotte Correctional Institution, located north of Fort Myers. Robertson stated that he killed Hart in hopes of being moved to death row.

Though the letter from DeSantis did not provide a specific rationale for rescinding Thompson's death warrant, it is worth noting that the governor previously issued a temporary stay of execution last month while a psychiatric evaluation was pending. Florida prison officials had still been preparing for Thompson's potential execution, despite the stay. His attorney, Bri Lacy, expressed relief over the decision, highlighting that Thompson suffers from dementia and is in deteriorating health, factors that raised significant concerns about the implications of an impending execution. Lacy hopes that Thompson will now be relocated by the Florida Department of Corrections to a more suitable medical facility that can provide him with necessary care.

This decision arrives amidst increasing scrutiny on the death penalty across the United States. In a notable incident in Tennessee, execution attempts on Christa Pike failed last week, even after she was administered two lethal doses of the drug pentobarbital. Additionally, the Pentagon has announced plans to livestream the upcoming execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, the Fort Hood shooter.

Although Thompson will remain on Florida's death row, the possibility of a new death warrant being signed for him in the future still exists. A spokesperson for DeSantis has yet to respond to inquiries regarding this significant decision.

Florida has been active in its use of the death penalty, carrying out a record 19 executions last year, the highest number since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. Notably, in July, Florida became the first state in nearly a decade to execute two prisoners within a single day.
