LONDON (AP) — King Charles III has expressed that he is “deeply touched” by the overwhelming response to his recent update regarding his cancer treatment. Buckingham Palace announced this response on Saturday, highlighting the monarch's satisfaction in bringing attention to the importance of cancer screening programs. Health charities and medical professionals have praised his candidness, noting that his announcement has already encouraged many people to seek information about cancer.
In a deeply personal video statement, the 77-year-old king shared that a cancer diagnosis can seem “overwhelming.” However, he also emphasized that early detection offers “the precious gift of hope.” In his address, he stated that his treatment regimen would be adjusted in the upcoming year due to “early diagnosis, effective intervention, and adherence to ‘doctors’ orders.’” The king urged the public to take advantage of screening services for breast, bowel, and cervical cancer that are offered by Britain’s National Health Service (NHS).
During a telethon for “Stand Up to Cancer” broadcast on Channel 4, King Charles reiterated, “Early diagnosis quite simply saves lives.” He noted that early detection has allowed him to “continue leading a full and active life even while undergoing treatment.” The monarch has been receiving outpatient treatment for nearly two years, and while Buckingham Palace has not confirmed whether he is in remission, they noted that his treatment is transitioning to a “precautionary phase,” during which his condition will be monitored to ensure ongoing recovery.
King Charles revealed his cancer diagnosis in February 2024, breaking from the traditional secrecy surrounding royal health matters to promote awareness about cancer. Despite the transparency, the specifics of his cancer type and treatment remain undisclosed, which the palace stated is a deliberate choice meant to maximize the reach of his message.
The king’s cancer was discovered while he was being treated for an enlarged prostate. Although doctors confirmed it was not prostate cancer, additional tests unveiled a “separate issue of concern,” according to palace officials. Following his diagnosis, King Charles suspended public appearances for approximately two months. Since then, he has resumed his public duties, visiting cancer treatment centers nationwide and sharing stories with fellow patients.
Buckingham Palace indicated that King Charles is “greatly encouraged and deeply touched” by the positive reaction his statements have garnered regarding cancer screening. British cancer charities noted a significant increase in people seeking cancer-related information following the king's disclosure about his treatment. Cancer Research UK reported that about 100,000 individuals have visited its Screening Checker website since its launch on December 5, with the majority of visits occurring after the king’s recent announcement.
Michelle Mitchell, Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK, remarked, “When public figures speak openly about their cancer diagnosis, it can prompt others to check in on their health.” Broadcaster Jonathan Dimbleby, who is also the king’s authorized biographer, called the decision to speak on this subject “a remarkable thing for a monarch to do,” adding, “It takes guts, and the fact that he came out and did that will save lives.”
The Princess of Wales, who announced her own cancer diagnosis six weeks following her father-in-law’s revelation, has also provided updates on her treatment. Kate Middleton announced in January that her cancer is currently in remission.
