NEW YORK (AP) - The recent release of files pertaining to millionaire financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has provided new insights into his interactions with various affluent individuals, some of which occurred shortly before his death by suicide in 2019.

The Justice Department disclosed over 3 million pages of documents alongside thousands of videos and photos, a requirement set forth by a law passed by Congress. By Friday evening, more than 600,000 documents had been made available online, although many more files, deemed potentially applicable for release by prosecutors, remain undisclosed. This situation has sparked criticism from Democratic lawmakers.

Epstein's Communications with Elon Musk and Howard Lutnick

Among the revelations, it was disclosed that billionaire Tesla founder Elon Musk communicated with Epstein via email in 2012 and 2013 regarding potential visits to Epstein’s infamous island compound, alleged to have been the site of numerous incidents of sexual abuse. Epstein asked Musk how many guests he would like flown over by helicopter, to which Musk replied it would just be him and his then-partner. He also inquired about timing for the "wildest party" on the island, as noted in the Justice Department records. However, it remains unclear whether these visits actually occurred.

Musk has since asserted that he consistently rejected Epstein's invitations, stating on X in 2025, "Epstein tried to get me to go to his island and I REFUSED."

Epstein also extended an invitation to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick in December 2012. Lutnick’s wife eagerly accepted the proposition, indicating they would arrive via yacht with their children. Additionally, records show that Lutnick and Epstein had drinks together in 2011 and that they communicated about residential construction nearby in 2018. Lutnick has distanced himself from Epstein in the past, calling him “gross” and claiming he severed ties long ago, although he did not respond to requests for comment regarding these revelations.

Political Discussions with Steve Bannon and an Ex-Obama Official

The documents also showcase Epstein’s friendly exchanges with Steve Bannon, a prominent advisor to former President Donald Trump. In the months leading up to Epstein’s death, they discussed topics ranging from politics to travel and even a documentary Bannon intended to produce that could potentially rehabilitate Epstein’s image. At one point in March 2019, Bannon requested Epstein's plane for transportation from Rome. Later, Epstein jokingly messaged Bannon, indicating that their friendship was the reason Trump was anxious during the night.

Additionally, Epstein communicated with Kathy Ruemmler, a former Obama White House official and attorney. In a poorly written email, he criticized Democrats for characterizing Trump as a Mafia-like figure, despite expressing disdain for Trump himself. Bannon has not responded to inquiries regarding these communications, while Ruemmler stated through a representative that she regrets her association with Epstein from her time in private legal practice.

Ongoing Review of the Released Files

The Associated Press is in the process of examining these extensive files released by the Justice Department. Given the massive volume of documents and the complexity involved, the news organization is committed to ensuring accurate and thorough reporting. Their guidelines stipulate several principles, including the discretion of identifying sexual assault survivors and a commitment to avoid misinformation or bias in their reporting process.

In summary, the uncovered documents shed light on Epstein's connections and discussions with influential figures, revealing the extent of his networking prior to his death. The Justice Department’s decision to release these files, while significant, has also raised expectations for further disclosures to better understand the circumstances surrounding Epstein’s interactions and the implications of his actions.
