On Sunday, March 22, 2026, a tragic series of events unfolded in British Columbia (B.C.) as two unrelated avalanches claimed the lives of four individuals. The first incident occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. on Mount Knauss, where a group of four heli-skiers was caught in an avalanche. The Terrace RCMP responded to reports of the avalanche and quickly dispatched search crews to locate the affected individuals.

Upon reaching the scene, search teams confirmed that three of the heli-skiers had succumbed to their injuries. One remaining skier was airlifted with serious injuries to a nearby hospital for medical attention. The Canadian Press reported that this unfortunate avalanche incident illustrates the inherent dangers associated with backcountry skiing, particularly in regions prone to avalanches.

In a separate incident just a couple of hours later, another avalanche occurred about 1,000 kilometers away from Mount Knauss near the border with Alaska. Mounties in Atlin received an SOS alert from a Garmin GPS device situated approximately 500 kilometers from their location, in an area neighboring the Klehini River and Pleasant Camp. This alert indicated that someone in that remote location may have been in distress, prompting an urgent response.

A search operation was quickly initiated using helicopters to locate the individuals in need. Eventually, search teams found five people in total; however, one individual was confirmed deceased at the site of the avalanche. The four other individuals were reported uninjured and were safeguarded by the authorities.

The British Columbia Coroners Service has been notified of both incidents, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the avalanches are currently underway. These unrelated incidents serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of winter conditions in mountainous regions, highlighting the importance of safety measures for individuals engaging in outdoor activities.

As authorities continue to analyze the situations and gather more information, the tragic outcomes of these avalanches underscore the need for awareness and caution when traversing treacherous terrains, particularly in the backcountry during winter months.
