Two Young Pilots Tragically Lose Lives in Collision

On Sunday, a tragic collision occurred at LaGuardia Airport in New York, resulting in the deaths of two young Canadian pilots, Mackenzie Gunther and Antoine Forest, who were operating an Air Canada jet during its landing. The incident involved a collision with a Port Authority fire truck on the runway. While officials have not officially released the names of the pilots, family members and a Canadian college confirmed their identities.

Approximately 40 of the 70 passengers and crew aboard the regional jet, which was arriving from Montreal, as well as two individuals from the fire truck, were transported to hospitals, some with serious injuries. Fortunately, most were released by the following morning.

Federal Aviation Administration Administrator Brian Bedford commented on the incident, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of the two aspiring pilots. "These were two young men at the start of their careers. It’s an absolute tragedy that we’re sitting here with their loss," he stated during a press briefing.

An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the collision. Federal officials reported that a runway warning system failed to sound an alarm just moments before the crash. They are also examining the actions of the air traffic controllers who were managing a late-night emergency involving another aircraft at the time. The incident has drawn attention to the already chaotic state of U.S. airports, which were affected by a partial government shutdown.

Details have started to emerge about the two pilots. Antoine Forest was confirmed to be one of the victims, as identified by his great aunt, Jeannette Gagnier. She recalled that Forest had a lifelong dream of becoming a pilot. His LinkedIn profile indicates that he had been employed by two airlines for the past five years. Forest hailed from Coteau-du-Lac, a small city located in southwestern Québec. The mayor of the town, Andrée Brosseau, expressed condolences to the family via a translated post, stating that the community experienced an immense loss with Forest's passing.

In a heartfelt tribute, Forest’s brother, Cédric, shared a nostalgic photo of the two siblings as children. "Have a safe flight, my brother! This time may be the last," he wrote on Facebook, emphasizing the deep connection the brothers shared. Antoine's girlfriend, also a young pilot, posted a touching photo of them together, calling him "the love of my life."

Mackenzie Gunther was recognized by Seneca Polytechnic in Toronto, which confirmed that he graduated from its Honors Bachelor of Aviation Technology program in 2023. Following his graduation, he joined the Jazz Aviation Pathways Program, a training initiative by Air Canada. The flight involved in the crash was operated by Jazz Aviation on behalf of Air Canada. The college expressed its condolences to Gunther’s family and friends, noting that he would be "deeply missed." In his honor, flags at the school were lowered to half-staff.

Despite the tragic event, some passengers have expressed gratitude for the quick actions of both pilots. Clément Lelièvre, one of the passengers, credited Gunther and Forest with "incredible reflexes," which he believed saved many lives. He recounted how the pilots braked hard just as the plane touched down, likely averting further disaster.
