LONDON (AP) – In a notable case of domestic violence, Matvei Rumiantsev, a 23-year-old Russian man, was sentenced to four years in prison on Friday after being convicted of assaulting a woman in London. The incident, which occurred on January 18, 2025, gained public attention due to its unique circumstances, as the assault was witnessed via a video call by Barron Trump, the youngest son of former U.S. President Donald Trump. Upon witnessing the distressing scene, Barron Trump took the initiative to report the incident to the police, thereby helping to prevent a potentially more severe outcome.
Rumiantsev was found guilty by a jury on January 28 of assault with bodily harm while being acquitted of charges of rape and choking. In addition to the assault conviction, he was also convicted of perverting the course of justice after sending a letter from jail urging the victim to withdraw her accusations. During the sentencing, Justice Joel Bennathan remarked on Rumiantsev’s lack of remorse, describing him as “totally unrepentant” and noted his tendencies toward jealousy, particularly regarding the victim’s friendship with Barron Trump.
The victim of the attack, who is entitled to anonymity under United Kingdom law, reportedly became a target of Rumiantsev’s wrath after he became jealous of her interactions with the president's son. The woman had connected with Barron Trump through social media prior to the incident. During the assault, Rumiantsev answered a FaceTime call from Barron Trump on the victim's phone, and the young man reacted by turning the camera to show the woman in an apparent state of distress on the floor, which prompted immediate action.
In a recorded emergency call, Barron Trump expressed urgency to the operator, stating, “It’s really an emergency... I’m calling from the U.S., uh, I just got a call from a girl, you know, she’s getting beat up.” The police responded to the location provided and swiftly arrested Rumiantsev, who was employed as a receptionist in London.
During the trial, Rumiantsev claimed that he felt jealousy not only towards Barron Trump but also toward the victim, believing that she was misleading the younger Trump. His defense lawyer, Sasha Wass, argued that Barron Trump was unaware of the victim's relationship status and questioned the amount of meaningful information he could have gleaned from the brief video footage he saw. Wass suggested that the victim had manipulated her connection to Trump to provoke jealousy in Rumiantsev, characterizing their relationship as fraught with drama.
The 20-year-old Barron Trump, the only child of Donald and Melania Trump, did not testify during the proceedings. However, Justice Bennathan praised him for taking responsible action by alerting the authorities and ensuring the victim’s safety. The judge highlighted that the victim had expressed fears for her life during the ordeal, stating, “Mr. Trump properly and responsibly, despite being in the United States, made sure the emergency services here were called, and he told them what he had seen.”
This case underscores the importance of intervention in situations of domestic violence and reinforces the notion that all individuals have a responsibility to report such acts when they witness them, whether directly or through digital means. As the legal proceedings have concluded, the case serves as a reminder of the broader issue of domestic violence and the crucial support systems needed to protect victims.
