A joint federal-provincial commission is being considered to investigate the tragic shooting that resulted in the deaths of eight individuals in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. Nina Krieger, British Columbia's public safety minister, stated that establishing such a commission is an option, drawing parallels to the one that examined the mass casualty events in Nova Scotia in April 2020, which claimed 22 lives.
Krieger's remarks came after her recent meeting with Federal Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree in Ottawa, and just over three weeks following the announcement of a provincial inquest into the shooting that occurred on February 10. The shooting involved 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, who tragically took her mother's life and that of her 11-year-old half-brother at their family residence before moving to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, where she killed five children and an educator before taking her own life. This horrifying event also left more than two dozen others injured.
During her comments, Krieger noted that the federal government supports the ongoing provincial inquest but emphasized the importance of utilizing every available resource to address any lingering questions surrounding the incident. She acknowledged the urgent need for information by families affected, the community, and the broader public to prevent future occurrences of such tragedies.
Although it is currently too early to determine when a potential joint commission might be established, staff within Krieger's ministry indicated that a commission could potentially summon witnesses from outside British Columbia. This could include representatives from international companies operating in Canada, further broadening the scope of the investigation.
In addition to discussing the shooting, Krieger also expressed her support for the recent Royal Assent of Bill C-12. This legislation aims to address certain loopholes that have allowed individuals accused of extortion-related offenses to evade deportation by claiming refugee status. Krieger highlighted the significance of this law in ensuring that those who commit crimes impacting the community are held accountable.
