Durham Regional Police have reported that two suspects have turned themselves in following a disturbing incident involving a replica handgun after a fight at a high school basketball game in Oshawa. The altercation occurred on March 2, 2026, at the Durham College Athletic Complex, located at 21 Avenue of Champions, during the championship basketball final.

Paid-duty officers were present at the event when they received reports of a fight in the lobby around 8:20 p.m. Despite their attempts to intervene, the two suspects managed to escape the scene. After the fight, a firearm was discovered on the ground, which was later determined to be an imitation handgun, as stated by the police in their official release. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the altercation.

According to investigators, the same two suspects were also involved in a robbery that evening prior to the basketball game. Officers were dispatched to the area of Cedar Street and Porter Street at approximately 7:50 p.m. after receiving reports of an assault. The police detailed that the victim had met the two suspects outside of a residential building to sell shoes. Rather than completing the transaction, the suspects robbed the victim, fleeing the area with the shoes in hand.

Following this robbery, the suspects reportedly proceeded to the basketball game, where they allegedly "targeted and assaulted a second victim" using the imitation firearm before once again fleeing the scene. The police's swift investigation later led to the identification of the suspects involved in both the robbery and the fight at the basketball game.

On March 9, one of the suspects, identified as 19-year-old Khalil Adams from Ajax, voluntarily turned himself in to the authorities. Subsequently, the second suspect, a 17-year-old male from Pickering, surrendered to the police on March 30. Khalil Adams has been charged with several offenses, including robbery, disguise with intent, use of an imitation firearm during an offense, assault, and breaching probation.

The younger suspect is facing charges for robbery, disguise with intent, and failing to comply with a release order. It is noteworthy that at the time of these incidents, the 17-year-old was under specific conditions not to utilize any online marketplace applications, as mentioned by the police in their release.

The incidents have raised concerns about safety during public events, prompting the local authorities to review security measures and protocols for future gatherings. The investigation continues as police aim to ensure that similar events do not lead to violence or weapon-related incidents.
