In a tragic incident in Sooke, British Columbia, a man named Adam Steenbergen has been sentenced to four years in prison for the manslaughter of his friend Michael Leier. This sentencing follows an incident on March 12, 2023, when Steenbergen fired a shot at Leier, who was wearing a bulletproof vest as part of a reckless game that the two friends had previously engaged in. Despite wearing the vest, the bullet struck Leier in the chest, leading to his untimely death.

Steenbergen pleaded guilty to several charges, including manslaughter, in relation to Leier's death. During the sentencing, both the defense and prosecution requested that Steenbergen receive the mandatory minimum sentence. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Jennifer Duncan noted in her ruling that, although the shooting was not intentional, it displayed “breathtaking recklessness.” The case highlights the severe consequences of combining firearms with alcohol and drugs.

Details from the court ruling reveal that on the day of the incident, Steenbergen and Leier attended a party together where they consumed alcohol and used cocaine. Following this, they drove to a remote logging road, where they became stuck in the snow. Instead of seeking safety, the pair decided to engage in target practice, during which Steenbergen assisted Leier in putting on the bulletproof vest. Although they had previously participated in similar games with different safety equipment, this time ended in tragedy.

The court described the moment Steenbergen realized the severity of his friend's injuries. Upon recognizing that Leier was genuinely hurt, Steenbergen attempted to render aid by dragging him back to their vehicle. However, he was unable to get a signal on his cell phone to call for help and ran for approximately 20 minutes to find a passing vehicle that could assist in transporting Leier toward Sooke. It was during this frantic effort that Steenbergen attempted to perform CPR. Unfortunately, the paramedics arrived too late, and Leier was pronounced dead, having succumbed to a gunshot wound that caused significant internal damage.

Justice Duncan emphasized the impact of the incident on their small community, noting that Leier’s death affected many people in Sooke. She detailed that Steenbergen showed deep remorse for his actions and addressed the family members of Leier during the court proceedings. His lawyer expressed that Steenbergen was heavily intoxicated at the time of the incident, which contributed to the reckless decision-making that led to the fatal outcome.

In the ruling, the judge remarked, “Mr. Steenbergen’s words were simple but clearly from the heart and gut-wrenching for him to deliver.” She concluded that Steenbergen would carry the scars of his actions and their consequences for the rest of his life. The case serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers associated with the irresponsible use of firearms, especially when combined with drugs and alcohol.
