A dispute over naming rights payments for the Paramount Fine Foods Centre in Mississauga is escalating, with differing accounts from Paramount Fine Foods and the municipality regarding the status of the matter. In a recent update on his X account, Mohamad Fakih, the founder and CEO of Paramount Fine Foods, addressed the City of Mississauga's decision to remove his company's name from the facility, citing $1.6 million in missed payments related to a naming rights contract.
Fakih asserted, "Let me be absolutely clear. This is not a case of Paramount refusing to pay. To demonstrate my commitment to paying the amount, Paramount delivered cheques to the City for the full amount based on the agreed payment terms." He emphasized that he has been actively seeking a resolution since December, suggesting that ongoing demands from the City had made it impossible to reach a final agreement.
The CEO noted that the outstanding debt was incurred during a period when he did not have majority control of the company. "The outstanding amount connected to this sponsorship was not something I personally created or was responsible for," he explained, adding, "But because I love this city and respect the taxpayers of Mississauga, I will always be committed to paying the agreed owing amount." However, details regarding the specific payment arrangements were not provided.
The City of Mississauga responded to Fakih’s statements, asserting that they "will not negotiate in public." According to a spokesperson, City staff have been trying to get Paramount Fine Foods to pay the owed amount for a considerable time. The spokesperson clarified that the received post-dated cheques do not constitute actual payments and do not satisfy the full debt of $1.6 million owed to the City.
In an effort to protect taxpayers, the City announced it would pursue legal action to recover the remaining amount. A claim is expected to be filed in court shortly, although the claims surrounding this dispute have yet to be tested in court. The City did not disclose specifics regarding the cheques or the nature of the negotiations that have taken place thus far.
The tension around this financial dispute caught public attention when Fakih shared a video confirming his company’s name would be removed from the sports complex. He initially refrained from addressing the payment allegations and suggested that after more than a decade, Paramount's sponsorship was being redirected toward new community investments. "We are excited about what comes next and look forward to sharing those plans with you in the months ahead," he stated, while expressing ongoing support for the Mississauga community.
In light of the recent controversy, the City of Mississauga issued a statement confirming the termination of the sponsorship contract due to non-payment by Paramount Fine Foods. The city's staff noted they had made considerable efforts to resolve the issue, but were unable to reach an agreement. Mayor Carolyn Parrish echoed these sentiments and characterized the negotiations as "exhaustive," stating it was clear that a reasonable conclusion could not be reached.
Fakih responded to these assertions, stating that the narrative being shared by the Mayor does not reflect the facts, claiming he possesses text messages that contradict Parrish's representation of the situation. Fakih expressed disappointment at the Mayor's handling of the dispute and suggested that the City’s choice to escalate the matter publicly was unnecessary, especially given Paramount's willingness to fulfill their payment obligations.
As of June 1, the facility previously known as the Paramount Fine Foods Centre will be referred to as the Mississauga Sports and Entertainment Centre. City staff have confirmed that they will also assume food and beverage operations at the venue, which includes amenities such as ice rinks, artificial turf fields, and gymnasiums, as well as space for meetings and a lounge.
In conclusion, the fallout from this dispute highlights a complex interaction between private enterprise and municipal governance, with both parties preparing to stake their claims as the situation moves toward potential legal proceedings.
