As southern Ontario faces a heatwave, visitors at the FIFA Fan Festival Toronto are experiencing challenges in hydrating, as two water bottle-filling trailers have been taken out of service. This situation raises concerns among attendees at the event located at Fort York and The Bentway regarding the availability of public water stations, especially during the hot weather, which could lead to reliance on paid beverage options instead.

CityNews reported that attendees expressed their frustrations over the scarcity of no-cost water stations during the festival. After inquiries were made to the City of Toronto regarding these concerns, the municipality's communications director, Russell Baker, revealed that "possible water quality issues" were identified during pre-event testing at two of the water refilling trailers situated near the fan zone.

Baker emphasized the importance of ensuring that festival-goers have sufficient access to hydration, particularly given the rising temperatures. He confirmed that city staff, in collaboration with Toronto Public Health and FIFA, are actively working to assess the status of the affected trailers. He stated, "We know it's important for attendees to have access to water, especially during hot weather. We will continue to monitor water refill stations throughout the games."

While Baker did not provide specific details regarding the nature of the water quality issues, he highlighted that the proactive step of removing the faulty trailers demonstrates that the monitoring systems are effectively functioning. He reassured the public by stating, "There is no risk to the public." Additionally, Baker informed that there are three operational water fountains available on-site for attendees to fill their water bottles.

In light of the situation, the City of Toronto is exploring potential additional drinking water options to accommodate festival attendees. However, Baker did not disclose what these options might entail, promising that further information would be provided as soon as it becomes available.

The FIFA Fan Festival Toronto serves as an officially sanctioned venue for celebrating the World Cup and watching matches. The festival features a variety of entertainment acts, shops, and vendors, and it is set to continue until July 19. Entry to the festival requires tickets.
