Public transit is anticipated to emerge as a significant topic in the upcoming Toronto municipal election. In light of this, transit users convened on Sunday to voice their opinions and concerns ahead of the vote scheduled for October.

The transit advocacy organization TTCriders organized a Summit for Better Transit at the Scarborough Civic Centre, where they invited transit riders, community leaders, and local residents to discuss their priorities regarding public transportation.

During the event, TTCriders' executive director, Andrew Pulsifer, emphasized the importance of understanding where municipal election candidates stand on transit issues. He stated, “We need to let the people of Toronto know where their candidates stand when it comes to transit.” Pulsifer highlighted the necessity of hearing directly from transit riders about their experiences to inform election campaigns effectively. He also mentioned the importance of grassroots engagement, stating, “We also want to make sure that we have people knocking on doors, handing out flyers and talking to candidates about transit issues.”

Throughout the day-long summit, participants engaged in discussions covering a range of vital topics related to public transit. Key issues included transit affordability, reliability, accessibility, safety, and the potential for transit expansion. The participants also explored effective ways for riders to interact with election candidates concerning these pressing transit matters.

The event aimed to create a platform for open dialogue about transit challenges and solutions, with the hope that such conversations would influence municipal candidates' positions and policies on public transportation as the election approaches.

By gathering diverse voices and feedback, TTCriders and its participants strive to elevate the importance of public transit in the political arena, ensuring that it remains a priority in the municipal election narrative.
