MONTRÉAL – Transport Canada has appointed an observer to assist in overseeing the ongoing investigation into a train derailment that occurred northeast of Montreal over the past weekend. The agency emphasizes its commitment to closely monitoring the operational measures implemented in response to this incident, which took place at the edge of a residential neighborhood in Repentigny, Quebec.
The derailment incident involved a total of 49 railcars that went off the tracks near residential homes. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, and no hazardous materials were spilled during the incident. This aspect has alleviated some immediate concerns regarding public safety in the area.
Transport Canada has stated that their rail safety inspectors are actively monitoring the response efforts led by CN Rail. Their oversight includes ensuring compliance with safety regulations and maintaining appropriate speed limits for trains operating in the vicinity of the derailment site.
As a precautionary measure, trains are currently allowed to operate in the area under a temporary speed limit of approximately 15 km/h. This temporary limit is significantly lower than the regulated maximum speed limit of 80 km/h, reflecting a cautionary approach in the aftermath of the derailment.
In response to the incident, CN Rail has reported that its crews have re-established and completely rebuilt the railway track and track bed in the area where the derailment occurred. Normal rail traffic was able to resume overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday following these repairs. Nevertheless, CN Rail has indicated that additional repairs are still planned to ensure the ongoing safety and integrity of the rail infrastructure.
