DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) – On Sunday, Israeli military actions in Gaza resulted in the deaths of at least six Palestinians, including a 9-year-old girl named Tala Abu Matar, and left over a dozen others wounded, according to local health officials. This incident marks another tragic episode in an ongoing conflict that has seen heavy civilian casualties.

A drone strike targeted a blacksmith shop in Gaza City’s Sabra neighborhood, killing at least four Palestinians. The casualties were reported by officials at Shifa hospital, where the injured were taken for treatment. The Israeli military confirmed the attack, stating that it aimed to target “terrorist infrastructure,” but did not provide further details, eventually labeling it as a strike on a Hamas weapon production site.

In the aftermath of the initial strikes, the Israeli military issued an evacuation order for local residents. This was followed by intensified airstrikes on the same location approximately one hour later. The Palestinian Red Crescent Society reported that these subsequent strikes wounded an additional 14 individuals.

Moreover, the military confirmed the strike on a displacement tent in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, which resulted in one Palestinian death. Health officials at Nasser hospital reported the casualty but noted that the Israeli military claimed to be unaware of any civilian casualties from their operations, labeling the strike as part of their routine actions.

Since a ceasefire took effect on October 10, Israeli airstrikes have notably decreased, yet they continue on almost a daily basis. The Israeli military asserts that its operations are focused on Hamas and other militant groups, frequently declaring that those targeted were plotting attacks. However, these military actions have led to a significant number of civilian deaths.

According to Gaza's Health Ministry, at least 1,098 Palestinians, including over 260 children, have been killed in the aftermath of the ceasefire. In contrast, five Israeli soldiers have lost their lives during the same period. The brutal conflict began with the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas-led militants, which resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities in Israel, alongside 251 hostages taken.

In a troubling aspect of the ongoing violence, the Health Ministry claims that the retaliatory Israeli offensive has led to a staggering 73,221 Palestinian deaths. This figure is drawn from the records maintained by medical professionals within Gaza’s health system, which is recognized as credible by United Nations agencies and independent experts, even if it does not differentiate between civilians and combatants. Reports indicate that women and children constitute about half of the casualties.

Discussions between Israeli and Hamas representatives remain largely stalled, particularly concerning the disarmament of Hamas and the reconstruction of Gaza. With over 2 million people displaced, many find themselves living in overcrowded tent camps lacking basic services, while others reside amid the ruins of formerly inhabited buildings.

The humanitarian crisis continues to escalate as tensions remain high and the prospects for peace appear increasingly elusive.
