Dr. Murti pointed out that fundamental questions remain unanswered, such as the types of aircraft that will operate from the expanded airport and the projected number of daily flights. “What types of jets are going to be there? How many flights a day?” she inquired during a press conference held on Monday. These details are crucial to predicting the potential health consequences for local residents. “All of those things would go into understanding what that specific health impact would be there, and to be able to say to citizens who live in that area, this is the type of change we might see," Dr. Murti added.
While Ontario Premier Doug Ford has yet to provide an official expansion proposal for Billy Bishop airport, the Toronto Port Authority—responsible for the airport's joint operations alongside the City of Toronto and Transport Canada—has indicated that an expansion could cost between $4 billion and $5 billion. The anticipated duration for the construction is approximately 25 years, raising questions on how such an extensive project would influence the surrounding community and infrastructure.
Dr. Murti warned that an increase in flight activity would likely result in heightened levels of noise and air pollution. She expressed her concerns, stating, “I think an increase in planes, and increase in activity, will lead to some kind of additional contributions to noise [and] additional contributions to air pollution.” These concerns are not limited to health impacts; they may also extend to broader economic implications. Dr. Murti highlighted the possibility of future housing projects being canceled, further complicating the socio-economic landscape of the area.
In June, Transport Canada launched public consultations regarding the future of Billy Bishop airport, inviting feedback from the community until July 24.
