LONDON (AP) – Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown pleaded guilty on Friday to a charge of affray stemming from an incident in February 2023 at a nightclub in London. The altercation occurred when Brown struck music producer Abraham Diaw on the head with a bottle, leading to his involvement in a brawl at the Tape nightclub in the upscale Mayfair neighborhood.
During a hearing at the Southwark Crown Court in London, Brown, aged 37, altered his initial denial of more serious charges, including assault and attempting to cause grievous bodily harm. In exchange for his guilty plea to affray, prosecutors agreed to drop the more severe charges against him. His friend and vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, also pleaded guilty to affray during the same hearing.
The fight, which prosecutors described as a “vicious and unprovoked attack,” was captured on surveillance cameras in front of a crowd at the nightclub. The affray charge indicates that Chris Brown and Akinlolu threatened or engaged in unlawful violence, creating fear for personal safety in others present at the scene. Senior prosecutor Claire Campbell remarked on the unacceptable nature of the violence, emphasizing that the Crown Prosecution Service would pursue similar cases vigorously to ensure that no individual is above the law.
After the nightclub incident, Chris Brown left the United Kingdom but was later arrested in May 2025 at a hotel in Manchester during a trip for a concert. He had been out on bail, set at 5 million pounds (approximately $6.7 million), which allowed him to continue his tour in Europe and North America in the summer of that year. Following the guilty plea, he was released on bail again and is scheduled to be sentenced on October 26 for the affray charge, which could result in a maximum prison term of three years.
Chris Brown, who was sporting a tan suit, gold-rimmed sunglasses, and a St. Louis Cardinals baseball cap, took the time to sign autographs for fans while leaving the courthouse after the hearing. Rising to fame as a teenager in 2005, he secured his first Grammy award for Best R&B Album in 2011 for “F.A.M.E.” and obtained a second Grammy in the same category for “11:11 (Deluxe)” in 2025.
Despite his musical successes, Brown's career has been marred by repeated legal troubles. Notably, he was convicted of felony assault in 2009 for attacking then-girlfriend Rihanna just before they were scheduled to perform at the Grammys. In 2013, he faced misdemeanor assault charges for striking a man outside a hotel in Washington, D.C. He was subsequently ordered into rehab but dismissed from the facility for violating its rules. Furthermore, he has faced arrests in various U.S. states due to altercations and was arrested in Paris in 2019, though he was released without charge after being questioned on suspicion of rape.
