MIAMI (AP) Social media influencers Andrew and Tristan Tate will continue to be held in custody for at least the next two weeks, pending a hearing regarding their extradition to the United Kingdom. A federal judge made this ruling on Monday, where the brothers face serious charges including rape and sex trafficking. U.S. Magistrate Lauren Louis has scheduled a detention hearing for August 13 to assess whether the Tates should remain incarcerated during what is anticipated to be a lengthy extradition process.
The Tate brothers were not in court for this latest hearing, and their attendance was not mandated. They have been in jail since their arrest on July 18, following a brief court appearance two days later. The Tates have gained notoriety as divisive figures on the internet, promoting themes of wealth, male dominance, and views characterized as misogynistic through their various social media platforms. Despite facing these grave allegations, the brothers firmly deny any wrongdoing.
In court, the brothers' attorneys expressed their desire for the U.S. government to provide documents submitted by U.K. officials that were instrumental in securing their arrest. Attorney Joseph McBride asserted, “They don’t have anything but the accusations. It’s just their word against our word right now.” Assistant U.S. Attorney Alejandra López confirmed that the U.K. has until mid-September to submit all pertinent materials to the State Department.
The Tates maintain that their controversial remarks and behaviors have often been misconstrued or presented out of context, frequently claiming that such comments were meant as jokes. One of their attorneys, Jackie Perczek, argued that the Tates have demonstrated they are not a flight risk, citing their regular returns to Romania each month, despite facing earlier allegations of luring women for sexual exploitation. “For three years they have not fled,” she noted, emphasizing their compliance with travel and legal requirements.
Andrew and Tristan Tate, both holding dual U.S. and U.K. citizenship, have reportedly garnered millions of followers on social media, with significant support from certain political figures, including former President Donald Trump. However, the White House has indicated that the brothers should not expect any assistance from the administration. Following their arrest, McBride reiterated the Tates' stance of innocence, stating emphatically that they “shouldn’t be extradited for crimes they did not commit.” He further suggested that the extradition attempt is politically influenced, although he did not elaborate on this claim.
New charges brought against the Tates involve accusations from four additional alleged victims, with the charges being filed after evidence was collected by authorities in Bedfordshire, England. The allegations span from 2010 to 2017 and include serious offenses such as rape, assault, trafficking, and related crimes concerning indecent images of children and extreme pornography. The Tates are already facing separate charges of rape, bodily harm, human trafficking, and controlling prostitution in relation to three earlier accusers in the U.K. between 2012 and 2015.
The brothers relocated to Romania in 2016, where they were arrested in 2022 under suspicions of engaging in activities to exploit women sexually. They have consistently denied these claims, and the Romanian legal proceedings have faced delays due to various legal and procedural issues. Andrew Tate, 39, rose to fame about ten years ago as a contestant on the U.K. reality show “Big Brother,” but was expelled from the program when a video surfaced that appeared to show him assaulting a woman.
Currently, Andrew Tate has over 10 million followers on X (formerly Twitter) but has faced bans from platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram due to violations of hate speech policies. His controversial comments include statements suggesting that women who are sexually assaulted have a degree of responsibility for such attacks, alongside disturbing descriptions of potential violence against women.
