This alarming trend is being observed with increasing frequency, according to firefighters, who are now more frequently encountering the hazardous effects of lithium-ion battery failures.

In a recent video shared on social media, Toronto Fire Chief Jim Jessop depicted footage of an e-bike engulfed in flames. The battery pack experienced a violent explosion, causing burning cells to scatter across the driveway, illustrating the inherent risks associated with such incidents. Chief Jessop emphasized the escalating nature of these occurrences, stressing that the malfunctioning batteries can lead to unique dangers, which include not only flying battery cells but also toxic smoke and intense heat.

In recent years, there has been a notable surge in lithium-ion battery fires, predominantly driven by the rising popularity of e-bikes, e-scooters, and other personal mobility devices. Toronto Fire officials are warning the community that when these batteries fail, they can enter a state known as thermal runaway. This is a dangerous chain reaction that results in rapid overheating, potential explosions, and the discharge of unpredictable projectiles, significantly increasing the risk to surrounding individuals and structures.
