WASHINGTON (AP) – The Senate confirmed Todd Blanche as attorney general early Saturday, solidifying the influence of President Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer at the Department of Justice (DOJ), which Trump has aimed to align with his interests. The confirmation vote passed with a narrow margin of 50-49, making Blanche the second attorney general since Trump returned to the White House in 2022 with intentions to utilize the DOJ for investigating his political adversaries.
Blanche, who had been serving in an acting capacity, indicated on social media his gratitude toward Trump and the senators who worked late to seal his confirmation. The contentious confirmation process unveiled concerns from both sides of the aisle regarding placing a close ally of Trump at the helm of an institution traditionally regarded for its independence from political influence.
The vote was notably tight, with two Republican senators, Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, voting against Blanche alongside every Democrat. The difficulties surrounding his confirmation stemmed primarily from a controversial settlement related to Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS, which raised alarms among some Republicans.
Under pressure, Blanche publicly committed in writing that the DOJ would abandon Trump’s proposed $1.8 billion compensation fund aimed at compensating Trump’s allies, including individuals involved in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. This promise played a pivotal role in winning over Republican Senator Bill Cassidy, who ultimately cast the decisive vote in favor of Blanche.
Senator Cassidy emphasized that his support for Blanche was not a referendum on Trump but rather a vote based on the specific circumstances surrounding Blanche’s confirmation. However, Senate Democrat Dick Durbin criticized the decision, cautioning that Blanche’s appointment could be seen as a significant error and stressing the need for an attorney general dedicated to limiting governmental corruption during challenging times.
The long and arduous confirmation process highlighted skepticism among senators regarding Blanche’s loyalty to Trump, particularly following his elevation to the role in an acting capacity after Trump dismissed Pam Bondi in April. Blanche’s swift actions to advocate for Trump’s interests raised further concerns, leading to backlash over the establishment of the controversial $1.8 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund”.
Despite formally rescinding the fund due to pressure from Republican senators, Blanche continued to face opposition primarily focused on the implications of the settlement fund and tax audit immunity granted to Trump and his family. Murkowski highlighted the need for an attorney general capable of restraining the administration’s worst tendencies, announcing her opposition to Blanche’s nomination.
Blanche’s background as a former federal prosecutor in New York, alongside his role as a defense attorney for Trump during significant legal battles, has positioned him as a controversial figure within the DOJ. He previously led Trump’s defense team during the hush money trial and has pledged to tackle issues such as violent crime, illegal immigration, and drug trafficking while navigating the complexities of legal constraints arising from Trump's demands.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley endorsed Blanche, asserting he has led the DOJ effectively and is the appropriate choice for the position. However, critics remain unconvinced that Blanche can satisfy Trump’s desires for retribution without facing substantial resistance, as seen during Bondi’s tenure.
Since assuming his role, Blanche has initiated several high-profile investigations and appointed former Justice Department prosecutor Joseph diGenova to explore allegations against former law enforcement and intelligence officials regarding alleged conspiracies to undermine Trump.
