Former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios has made headlines after revealing on Wednesday that he tested positive for cocaine and was subsequently provisionally suspended from professional tennis. The 31-year-old Australian athlete, who faced off against Novak Djokovic in the 2022 Wimbledon singles final, is currently ranked 919th, primarily due to his struggles with a series of injuries over the past two years.

Kyrgios took to social media to share the details of his situation, admitting to his mistake and expressing his remorse. He stated, “I recently failed a drug test in Mallorca after testing positive for cocaine,” referring specifically to a lower-level tournament he participated in June. He added, “I made a huge mistake and take full responsibility for it.”

According to the regulations regarding banned substances, cocaine is prohibited during competitive events. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) has indicated that athletes may face varying levels of sanctions depending on whether the substance was used in-competition or out-of-competition, with lesser penalties applicable when the drug is utilized away from official events.

Kyrgios expressed his difficulties in coping with the challenges that have come as he nears the end of his career, particularly after enduring numerous injuries that have affected his performance. “At times I’ve felt helpless and alone. None of that excuses what I did,” he noted, reflecting on his mental state during this tumultuous period.

Recently, Kyrgios received a wild card entry to participate in doubles at Wimbledon last month, but unfortunately, he lost in the first round alongside his partner, Alexander Bublik. This recent setback comes as part of a broader trend of struggles for Kyrgios as he attempts to navigate the complexities of professional sports while managing both physical and mental health challenges.

The ITIA is managing the legal proceedings related to his case, revealing that his sample was collected on June 22, with the positive test result being confirmed on July 17, shortly after Kyrgios had concluded his participation at Wimbledon. Following these developments, a mandatory provisional suspension was placed on Kyrgios effective August 4. Notably, Kyrgios has not made an appeal against this suspension, a point emphasized by the ITIA.
