LONDON (AP) — Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, are set to return to the United Kingdom for an extended stay beginning this fall, although they will not resume their roles as working members of the royal family. This development was reported by The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The couple's children, Prince Archie, aged 7, and Princess Lilibet, aged 5, have already enrolled in British schools and are scheduled to begin classes in September. According to an insider close to the Sussexes, who asked to remain anonymous, the family intends to reside at a private, non-royal home outside of London while keeping their residence in Montecito, California, and a vacation property in Portugal.

The Daily Telegraph was the first outlet to break this story. When approached by the AP during a roundtable event with U.S. veterans in Washington, Harry declined to comment, stating, “Nothing to say.”

Harry and Meghan notably stepped back from royal duties and moved to California over six years ago to seek financial independence through lucrative deals with platforms like Netflix and Spotify. While their relationship with the rest of the royal family has faced significant strain since their departure, Harry has recently expressed a desire for reconciliation, particularly to spend more time with his father, King Charles III, who is currently battling an undisclosed form of cancer.

Charles was informed of Harry and Meghan's plans on Sunday, and the couple had visited the U.K. the previous month. Buckingham Palace maintains a policy of refraining from commenting on speculation involving non-working members of the royal family, and a spokesperson for Harry and Meghan also declined to provide any comments.

A source familiar with the Sussexes’ situation indicated that Meghan will continue to oversee her company, As Ever, from the U.K., while Harry can engage more actively with his charitable endeavors based in the country.

The couple’s relocation underscores the tumultuous relationship they have experienced with the royal family since their high-profile move to a mansion in Montecito. In various interviews and Harry's memoir "Spare," the couple has articulated their reasons for leaving Britain, citing a desire to escape the constraints of royal life. They have publicly criticized palace officials for their perceived insensitivity toward Meghan's mental health and have raised allegations that at least one family member expressed racist sentiments during Meghan's first pregnancy.

These issues have been further complicated by Harry's ongoing legal battles with British tabloids, which he accuses of illegally hacking his phone and invading his privacy in the past. He has suffered setbacks in several lawsuits, including a recent case against the publisher of the Daily Mail that resulted in a ruling that left him liable for millions of pounds in legal fees.

Moreover, Harry is involved in a legal dispute with the British government over police protection. He argues that he and his family require armed security due to their links to the royal family, irrespective of their official status as working royals. After losing a court case regarding this security issue last year, Harry expressed hope for mending ties with his family, noting, “I would love reconciliation with my family. There’s no point in continuing to fight anymore. I don’t know how much longer my father has.”

During a recent visit to the U.K., Harry engaged in various charity activities, and Meghan and their children accompanied him for part of the journey. This visit included a meeting with King Charles III at his Highgrove estate, marking the first time Archie and Lilibet had seen their grandfather since the late Queen Elizabeth II's platinum jubilee in 2022.

While Harry appears to be making strides in reconnecting with his father, there is no indication of any improvement in his relationship with his brother, Prince William, the heir to the throne. Peter Hunt, a former royal correspondent with the BBC, suggested that Harry's return might incite frustration from William, stating, “In the short term, Harry will be able to deepen his rapprochement with his father. And his presence back home will make it harder for his brother to duck a reconciliation.”
