Nearly two weeks have passed since an intense storm system wreaked havoc in parts of the Greater Toronto Area, yet many residents are still grappling with insurance claims as local businesses face an unprecedented surge in demand. The storm, which struck on September 2, resulted in severe flooding, uprooted trees, and significant damage, causing residents like East York's John McCorkell to face challenges in obtaining timely compensation for damages.

McCorkell, whose vehicle was crushed by a large tree during the storm, reported that while the initial claim process was relatively quick, subsequent interactions with the insurance company have been frustrating. He mentioned experiencing mixed messages regarding the vehicle’s location and difficulties retrieving necessary documentation from his bank. As a result, he was left without a rental car after the insurance company terminated that provision. “We're on the phone every day, we’re on hold,” reflected McCorkell, expressing his gratitude that the tree didn’t injure him or his family.

The storm's aftermath saw Toronto fire officials receive nearly 1,500 calls in just 24 hours, marking their second-highest daily call volume since the 2013 ice storm. Local restoration companies and auto repair shops have been busier than ever, capitalizing on the spike in demand for post-storm recovery. Raj Singh, manager at Carstar Toronto Eastern, showcased a severely damaged electric vehicle that had been pierced by a tree branch. He noted that the insurance company had not yet authorized the repairs, potentially extending the time frame needed to assess and carry out the full repairs.

Excellence Auto Collision in Scarborough reported an influx of clients dealing with hail damage. To manage the rising demand, they have implemented a high-tech vehicle scanning system and brought a specialist from Calgary to aid in assessing damages accurately. One customer, Tomel Sidi, narrated how he witnessed the storm from a coffee shop and later discovered his Hyundai was covered in hundreds of dents caused by the hail.

The new scanning technology significantly speeds up the inspection process, allowing for immediate identification and documentation of damages. On a recent visit to Excellence Auto Collision, vehicles were scanned rapidly, producing detailed reports for both customers and insurance companies. This system can detect a multitude of dents accurately, minimizing human error in the assessment process.

In light of the storm's impact, the Insurance Bureau of Canada has activated its consumer information center to assist individuals navigating the claims process. A representative highlighted the need for policyholders to remain patient, as many insurance adjusters are currently overwhelmed with claims. They are focusing on the most urgent cases, especially those involving displaced individuals. Notably, hail-related damages are generally covered under comprehensive insurance policies, although broader jurisdictional premiums may rise due to a high number of claims.

Anne Marie Thomas, the bureau’s consumer and industry relations director, advised those affected to take thorough documentation of their damages, including photographs and receipts for any expenses incurred while addressing property issues. She emphasized the importance of validation for any contractors claiming to represent insurance companies, reinforcing the need for vigilance and thoroughness in these matters. “There is no such thing as too much information when it comes to an insurance company and your claim,” she stated, urging affected residents to stay engaged and patient as they navigate the complex aftermath of the storm.
