On Sunday, President Donald Trump announced plans for a massive arch to be constructed between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. He described this arch as a "top grade military complex," designed to accommodate drones and snipers while also serving as a storage facility for ammunition. This initiative is part of a broader approach by Trump, where he intertwines beautification projects with national security claims.
Trump has previously referred to the newly proposed White House ballroom as a military complex, asserting that its construction is necessary for safeguarding the nation. Despite the president's bold assertions, the Pentagon has not provided further details or any substantive comments on his announcement.
The proposed arch is currently facing legal challenges despite receiving initial approval from the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, which is comprised of members appointed by Trump. A lawsuit has been filed by a group consisting of three veterans and an architectural historian, arguing that Congressional approval is necessary for the project to proceed. Nicolas Sansone, one of the attorneys for the group, criticized the president's claims of a national security necessity as inadequate and emphasized the illegality of the project without Congressional authorization.
In a social media post, Trump mentioned that he agreed to the military's "strong request" to enhance the planned structure into a military-grade facility measuring 250 feet (76 meters) tall. He stated the arch would be equipped to deploy a significant number of drones and have snipers positioned on both the rooftop and plaza areas, in addition to storing large caches of sniper ammunition.
The proposed location for the arch is within a heavy traffic area adjacent to the Memorial Bridge, which is among the few connections between Washington, D.C., and northern Virginia. This positioning raises additional concerns regarding safety, particularly related to nearby Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. Representative Don Beyer, a Democrat from Virginia, expressed that situating a drone launching site in the flight path of the airport is not only impractical but also potentially hazardous. He suspects that Trump anticipates losing legal battles related to the arch and is framing the project under the guise of national security as a defense.
The arch project forms part of several initiatives by Trump aimed at making a lasting impact on Washington. Other projects include renovations to the Kennedy Center, improvements to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, and rebuilding a golf course at East Potomac Park—a move that could limit public access to walking and biking trails.
While groundbreaking for the arch was anticipated to commence this month, the project has yet to obtain final approval from the National Capital Planning Commission. After initially approving the site and preliminary plans in July, the commission is scheduled to revisit the issue in the upcoming fall season.
