A two-alarm fire erupted in a high-rise building located in Regent Park, Toronto, on Thursday afternoon, prompting a swift response from emergency services. The Toronto Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to the scene at approximately 1:40 p.m., where they discovered a blaze in a sixth-floor unit. Firefighters acted quickly to extinguish the fire.
During the rescue operation, two residents and three dogs were safely evacuated from the affected unit. Emergency medical personnel provided on-site assessments, and both individuals opted to decline transport to a hospital. Fortunately, no additional injuries were reported as a result of this incident.
After the fire was brought under control, at least three charred e-bikes were found on the building's front lawn, secured by police tape. Currently, authorities are still investigating whether these e-bikes were connected to the fire in any capacity. The immediate vicinity faced road closures during the investigation, but these have since been lifted, allowing normal traffic flow to resume.
Concerns about the hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries used in e-bikes have been growing in Toronto. Toronto Fire officials, including Fire Chief Jim Jessop and Mayor Olivia Chow, have been vocal about the need for stricter government regulations governing these devices. Over the past year, Toronto has recorded over 100 incidents of fires linked to lithium-ion batteries, evidencing a troubling trend that poses risks to both residents and property.
The most recent battery-related fire, which occurred just days prior on a Tuesday in Scarborough, resulted in injuries to one individual, underscoring the ongoing dangers associated with these batteries. Authorities continue to emphasize the urgent need for regulatory measures to mitigate the risks posed by e-bikes, signaling that public safety remains a top priority amid a notable increase in related incidents.
