OTTAWA – The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has confirmed that a Canadian individual has been arrested by the FBI in relation to a cyberattack perpetrated by the criminal hacking group known as ShinyHunters. This group successfully breached the FBI's jobs portal, compromising sensitive personal data of nearly all FBI employees.

FBI Director Kash Patel announced the arrest on Friday, stating that it occurred earlier in the week as part of an ongoing investigation into the hack of the website FBIjobs.gov. He emphasized the agency’s commitment to dismantling the ShinyHunters network, remarking, “This is the latest arrest the FBI has made in a matter of days involving this network, as we work non-stop to dismantle the group, pursue new leads and evidence, and act quickly.” Patel reiterated that the FBI will continue collaborating closely with its partners to disrupt the activities of ShinyHunters and its associates, regardless of their operational locations.

The recent arrest adds to the FBI's focus on the ShinyHunters group, which claimed responsibility for the breach. Patel noted that the hack occurred via a platform managed by a third-party vendor, raising concerns about the security of sensitive information stored on such networks. However, details regarding the identity of the arrested individual and the specific charges they may face have not been disclosed by the FBI.

In response to inquiries, RCMP spokesperson Ian Lordon confirmed the agency’s awareness of the arrest but refrained from providing further information, stating, “The RCMP does not comment on investigations being conducted by other countries.” He directed all further questions to the FBI for additional clarification.

ShinyHunters has previously claimed responsibility for the hack and cited its actions as a rebuttal to what it perceived as false allegations made by the FBI. In a public advisory released in May, the FBI described ShinyHunters as a “cyber criminal group specializing in large-scale data breaches and extortion.” The advisory categorized ShinyHunters as “threat actors” who often utilize real or exaggerated claims of access to sensitive information to extort payments from victims.

Experts in cybersecurity have expressed concern regarding the implications of the data breach, noting that while the compromised information is the type typically accessed during such incidents, the potential national security ramifications are alarming. The breach could expose FBI agents and their families to various forms of harassment, including extortion and swatting, given that the identities of agents’ spouses were also allegedly obtained in the attack.

This incident underscores an escalating concern regarding cybersecurity threats, particularly those targeting government agencies and their personnel. As the investigation progresses, further arrests and actions against the ShinyHunters group are anticipated, reflecting ongoing efforts by law enforcement to safeguard personal and sensitive information from criminal exploitation.
