Toronto Officer Cleared in Fatal North York Raid

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) of the province has cleared a Toronto police officer of any misconduct related to a shooting incident that occurred during a raid in North York. On June 11, 2026, this confrontation resulted in the tragic death of Constable Marc Pinizzotto, a dedicated member of the Emergency Task Force. The raid was conducted in connection with an investigation into multiple shootings, including a notable incident at the U.S. Consulate earlier that year.

The events unfolded in the early morning hours when the Emergency Task Force officers executed a raid at an apartment located in the vicinity of Black Creek Drive and Trethewey Drive. During this operation, a suspect, identified as 19-year-old Nicholas Bennett, opened fire on the officers with a pistol. In the exchange of gunfire, Constable Pinizzotto was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries while being treated in a hospital.

According to the SIU's investigation, another officer responded by returning fire, wounding Bennett severely. He survived the encounter and, upon regaining consciousness in the hospital, faced first-degree murder charges related to the death of Constable Pinizzotto.

In a statement released on Friday, SIU director Joseph Martino affirmed that the actions of the involved officer were justified, considering the grave threat posed by the suspect. Martino emphasized that the gunfire directed at the officers left them with “no alternative” but to respond with lethal force for their self-defense. He stated, “There can be no doubt that the officers believed their lives to be in danger and that they acted to protect themselves from grievous bodily harm and death.”

Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw addressed the outcome of the investigation, noting that while the SIU's conclusion marks the end of their inquiry, the emotional toll of Constable Pinizzotto's death continues to resonate within the police service. Chief Demkiw expressed the profound loss felt by the department, recognizing Pinizzotto’s dedication and service to the community. He described Marc as a “respected colleague and a friend,” whose sacrifice will always be remembered. He further thanked the community for their support during this challenging period, urging them to keep Marc's family, friends, and loved ones in their thoughts.

This incident highlights the dangers law enforcement officers face in the line of duty, particularly during high-risk operations such as raids. The tragic outcome serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by police officers in their commitment to uphold safety and justice in society.
