Long-time Toronto councillor Frances Nunziata has not confirmed reports regarding her withdrawal from the municipal election race. According to CityNews, sources indicated that the York South-Weston councillor would be stepping down from the contest on Friday. However, Nunziata issued a statement to CityNews stating, “I continue to canvass. My campaign remains unchanged.” She further added, “I will make no further comment.”
Nunziata is currently facing a competitive race in the York South-Weston riding. In the previous election, she won against Chiara Padovani by a narrow margin of just 94 votes. Given this close result, the upcoming election is anticipated to be highly contested.
Frances Nunziata has been a fixture in local politics since 1985 when she first entered public service as a school board trustee. She has represented the York South-Weston constituency since 1997, making her the longest-serving member of Toronto's city council. Additionally, she has held the position of Speaker of Toronto City Council since 2010, showcasing her extensive experience and influence in municipal governance.
In her political career prior to serving as a councillor, Nunziata was the Mayor of York from 1994 to 1997 and served as a City of York councillor from 1988 to 1994. Her long tenure in public office reflects her commitment to her community and her political acumen.
As the municipal election approaches on October 26, the atmosphere is charged with anticipation, especially for the candidates in York South-Weston. Advance polls for the Toronto municipal elections opened on Tuesday and will remain available until Sunday, providing an opportunity for voters to participate ahead of Election Day.
The competitive dynamics of the York South-Weston race underline the importance of this election for both candidates. With Nunziata's extensive experience and Padovani's determination, constituents will be keenly watching how this race unfolds in the days leading to the election.
