Canadians are currently experiencing a surge of interest in poet Anne Carson following her recent Nobel Prize win in literature. The announcement has led to an extraordinary 10,325 percent increase in book sales at Indigo, a major Canadian bookseller. The sales spike was recorded on the day of the announcement, October 8, 2026, compared to the prior day. Additionally, online searches for Carson's works rocketed by an astonishing 20,809 percent.

Although Indigo did not disclose specific sales figures due to proprietary concerns, they reported selling 18 different titles by Carson on the day of her award announcement. The top-selling titles included "Autobiography of Red," "The Beauty of the Husband," and "Red Doc."

The enthusiasm for Carson's work has also extended into the realm of music. Canadian rock band Rheostatics reported a significant increase in streaming for their album "The Great Lakes Suite," which features spoken-word performances of Carson's poems. Band member Dave Bidini noted that the three tracks featuring Carson have quickly become the band's most popular songs on Spotify and Apple Music, completely overtaking longstanding favorites. This collaboration came about through band member Kevin Hearn’s connection to Carson via the late Lou Reed, who was a fan of her work.

Bidini expressed his satisfaction with the newfound attention Carson is receiving, emphasizing her dedication to her craft and her lack of focus on cultivating a public persona. He stated, "All she did was write," stressing that great work can transcend social media popularity. This sentiment is particularly poignant in light of Carson's artistic integrity, which stands as testament to the value of high-quality literature.

The impact of Carson's Nobel win is not limited to sales; public libraries are also witnessing an unprecedented surge in demand for her work. The Ottawa Public Library, for instance, reported 972 holds across 12 of Carson's titles, an increase from just 14 holds before the announcement. To accommodate this surge, the library is ordering additional print and digital copies.

In Calgary, the Calgary Public Library observed a similar phenomenon, with 435 holds on Carson's print titles placed just since the announcement. Of those, 131 holds were specifically for "Autobiography of Red," marking an exceptional rate for poetry-related holds. Meanwhile, in Quebec, the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec noted that prior to the Nobel announcement, only one of Carson's works had been borrowed from their Montreal location. Following the announcement, virtually all print copies were reserved, leading to 241 total reservations for her works in both French and English.

In Halifax, Public Libraries also recorded a boost, with 152 new holds across five of Carson's titles attributed to her recent recognition. Carson is celebrated as one of Canada’s most esteemed authors, known for her innovative work that seamlessly blends poetry, prose, classical mythology, and literary criticism.

The timing of her Nobel Prize coincides with the upcoming release of her new book, "Beware the Man Whose Handwriting Sways Like a Reed in the Wind," set for February 2027. Bidini hopes that the recent excitement surrounding Carson will encourage more readers to explore the deeply personal and accessible nature of her writing, noting that poetry can be relatable and rewarding, contrary to its often perceived elitism.
