Toronto police have launched an investigation following an incident where a woman was reportedly sexually assaulted by a rideshare driver in downtown Toronto on Halloween night. This alarming case has prompted authorities to ask for assistance from the public, as they believe there may be more victims.
According to the details released by the investigators, the incident occurred shortly before 10 p.m. in the Yonge-Church corridor. The woman entered the rideshare vehicle, taking a seat in the front passenger area. It was here that she was allegedly sexually assaulted by the driver.
After arriving at her destination, police report that the driver allegedly restricted the victim from exiting the vehicle, subjecting her to further sexual assault. In a desperate attempt to escape, the victim managed to flee the vehicle. However, she inadvertently left her purse behind in the car. Unfortunately, this led to another alleged assault; police claim that as the victim retrieved her purse, the driver exited the vehicle and assaulted her once more.
The alleged assailant has been identified as 32-year-old Sahib Brar, a resident of Brampton. Subsequent to the reported incidents, Brar was arrested and charged with two counts of sexual assault and forcible confinement. He was scheduled to appear in court on November 2.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have been a victim or who has any information related to this case to come forward and contact the police. This call to action highlights the police’s commitment to ensuring justice for victims and the importance of community engagement in addressing such serious allegations.
The nature of these incidents raises broader concerns regarding safety, particularly in the rideshare industry. As investigations continue, the police are keen to uncover more details and provide support to any potential additional victims who may be hesitant to come forward.
This case exemplifies the critical role of law enforcement in investigating sexual crimes and supporting victims. The ongoing inquiry aims not only to hold the alleged perpetrator accountable but also to foster a safer environment for all individuals using rideshare services in Toronto.
