The Tumbler Ridge RCMP has reported a tragic mass shooting incident that occurred on Tuesday in the northeastern municipality of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, resulting in the deaths of at least ten individuals. Multiple bodies were discovered in and around Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, including the suspected shooter.
Authorities responded to the scene during the early afternoon. At 1:20 p.m., the police confirmed an active shooter situation at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. An update issued around 6 p.m. stated that officers had entered the school as part of their initial response. They found multiple casualties, with the alleged shooter discovered dead from what appears to be a self-inflicted injury.
Six additional individuals, aside from the suspect, were found deceased inside the school. Two other victims were airlifted to the hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries, while a third victim succumbed to their injuries during transport to the hospital.
In a press briefing, Superintendent Ken Floyd, the North District Commander of the BC RCMP, confirmed that the two injured victims were evacuated outside Tumbler Ridge. However, the specific destinations were not disclosed. The school was evacuated, with approximately 100 students and staff safely removed from the premises.
Emergency crews are currently assessing and providing care to around 25 individuals with non-life-threatening injuries. An emergency alert sent out earlier indicated that a female suspect was wearing a dress with brown hair. Police have identified the shooter but are withholding further details at this time. Floyd confirmed that the female described in the alert is indeed the suspect.
The emergency alert advised residents to remain indoors, secure their doors, and avoid leaving home, while urging others to stay away from the area and abide by police directions. By 5:45 p.m., the alert was rescinded, as authorities believed there were no additional threats to public safety. Investigations continued as officers began searching nearby homes and properties for any further victims or connections to the incident.
The BC RCMP Major Crime Section is now leading the investigation, with additional police units, emergency responders, and victim services from neighboring areas providing assistance.
In reaction to the tragedy, Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his devastation, stating, “My prayers and deepest condolences are with the families and friends who have lost loved ones to these horrific acts of violence.” He confirmed that Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree is coordinating the federal response and announced the suspension of his planned travels in light of the incident.
British Columbia Premier David Eby also confirmed the fatalities, noting that eight victims were found at the school while two others were located in a nearby residence. He urged Canadians to show support for the Tumbler Ridge community, stating that the effects of this tragedy would resonate for years. Resources are being mobilized for the community, including trauma-informed counselors to support affected families.
Minister Krieger characterized the event as one of the worst mass shootings in the province's history, and she echoed the need for community support. She noted that mental health professionals would be available to assist families and the broader community, emphasizing the emotional toll this incident has taken on the tight-knit Tumbler Ridge community of around 2,000 residents.
Community members have expressed their shock and grief over the incident. Nicole Noksana, Chair of the Parent Advisory Council, stated that the council is "heartbroken." Meanwhile, local resident Manda Maggs described seeing distraught parents arriving at the school, highlighting the close connections within the town.
