The Russian Defense Ministry claimed on Wednesday that its armed forces have gained control over the entire Luhansk region of Ukraine. However, a military official from Kyiv, Viktor Trehubov, refuted this assertion, stating that there have been no significant changes in the area. The claims were made as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy prepared for talks with U.S. envoys attempting to mediate an end to the ongoing invasion by Moscow.
According to the Russian Defense Ministry, units of the Group of Forces West have successfully completed the "liberation" of the Luhansk People's Republic. Despite this declaration, Trehubov emphasized that Ukrainian forces only maintain control over small patches of territory in Luhansk, which have been held by the 3rd brigade for an extended period. This inconsistency in Russian military claims has raised skepticism, as discrepancies have been noted in past announcements regarding battlefield progress.
Ukrainian officials have previously accused Russia of fabricating claims of military gains to convince U.S. negotiators that a Russian victory is unavoidable. Diplomatic efforts led by the U.S. have struggled to break the stalemate in the conflict, which has now entered its fifth year. As tensions persist, Washington's focus has shifted toward a different conflict, particularly concerning Iran.
Zelenskyy disclosed that he would be holding a video call later that day with U.S. President Donald Trump's envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, to discuss potential trilateral negotiations. In September 2022, Russia illegally annexed four eastern regions of Ukraine, including Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia, yet has never fully controlled these territories. President Vladimir Putin previously stated that Ukrainian forces still occupy 0.13% of Luhansk, insisting that the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from these regions is a critical condition for any peace agreement. Ukraine has firmly rejected this demand.
Amidst ongoing conflict, Zelenskyy reported that front-line combat remains intense, specifically noting a Russian spring offensive, although he asserted that Ukrainian forces are successfully holding their positions. The Ukrainian military has adapted its tactics to disrupt the efforts of the larger Russian army, as noted by the Institute for the Study of War. The Washington-based think tank also indicated that Ukrainian forces have experienced their most substantial battlefield gains in recent months.
The civilian toll of the invasion has been severe, with the United Nations estimating over 15,000 fatalities among Ukrainian civilians. On the same day as the Russian claims regarding Luhansk, a drone strike carried out by Russian forces killed four individuals in Ukraine's central Cherkasy region. The strike targeted an open area in Zolotonosha, located approximately 150 kilometers southeast of Kyiv. Additionally, Russian drones inflicted damage on multiple sites in western Ukraine, including an industrial facility in Lutsk, which is about 400 kilometers west of the capital.
The mayor of Lutsk, Ihor Polishchuk, reported that a postal sorting center and a food distribution site were damaged, while debris from the fallen drones caused a fire in a residential building, although there were no reported casualties. Ukraine's air force announced it successfully intercepted 298 drones, primarily Iranian-designed Shahed drones, launched from various locations in western Russia and Crimea. Despite this, 20 of the drones managed to strike 11 sites across the country.
In response to ongoing drone attacks, Ukraine has developed advanced drone technology. Moreover, the nation is extending its support to Gulf countries in efforts to thwart Iranian drone strikes. Zelenskyy mentioned that Ukraine is engaged in meaningful cooperation with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar amid the continuing tensions in the Middle East, while officials are also in dialogue with Jordan and maintaining contact with Bahrain, Kuwait, and Iraq.
