Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has raised alarm regarding the potential impact of a prolonged U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran on American support for Ukraine. In an exclusive interview with The Associated Press on Saturday in Istanbul, Zelenskyy expressed concerns that shifting Washington's global priorities could lead to a reduction in vital military aid, particularly critically needed Patriot air defense missiles, essential for countering Russia's daily missile assaults.

Zelenskyy highlighted Ukraine's urgent requirement for U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems to defend against the increasing threats posed by Russian ballistic missiles, which have resulted in significant civilian casualties since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began over four years ago. He noted that Russia has been targeting urban areas, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis by disrupting energy supplies and denying essential services to civilians.

In his remarks, Zelenskyy acknowledged, "We have to recognize that we are not the priority for today," expressing fear that an extended conflict in Iran would divert attention and resources away from Ukraine, thus diminishing support for their war efforts. He emphasized the critical nature of acquiring Patriot systems and warned that if the conflict persists, the military aid Ukraine receives will likely decrease.

Recent U.S.-brokered talks between Kyiv and Moscow, which ended in February without a breakthrough, reflect a broader loss of focus on Ukraine's plight, Zelenskyy pointed out. Although discussions continue regarding security guarantees, the ongoing conflict in Iran complicates the situation further, consuming resources and diverting attention that could be directed toward Ukraine.

Zelenskyy has counted on European allies to assist in procuring additional Patriot systems, yet the ongoing Iran war has strained global military resources. The conflict, which has entered its sixth week, has rattled the global economy while simultaneously providing Russia with economic benefits, notably through rising oil prices. This surge in oil revenue has bolstered Russia's ability to sustain its military efforts in Ukraine, directly undermining Ukraine's strategy to weaken Moscow's economy.

Furthermore, Zelenskyy stated that Russia benefits economically from the situation in the Middle East, emphasizing the limited easing of American sanctions on Russian oil during this tumultuous period. In retaliation, Ukraine has ramped up its drone attacks on Russian oil facilities to undermine Moscow’s financial gains from the ongoing Iran war.

To maintain Ukraine's position on the international agenda, Zelenskyy has proposed sharing Ukraine's military experience with U.S. allies, particularly in countering threats posed by Iranian drones. He has positioned Ukraine as a potential partner for Gulf Arab nations, offering to share expertise in interceptor and sea drone technology in exchange for support in acquiring ballistic missile systems.

Zelenskyy’s recent diplomatic efforts also included discussions in Istanbul with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan about potential defense cooperation and peace talks. Following his meeting in Turkey, Zelenskyy visited Syria to engage with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, discussing military and security exchanges between the two nations.

The situation on the ground remains tense, with Russian forces gearing up for a new offensive as the weather improves. Despite suffering setbacks and failing to capture significant Ukrainian cities, Russia continues to press its military campaign, occupying approximately 20% of Ukraine, including the Crimean Peninsula.

As conflict escalates, Ukrainian cities remain vulnerable to missile strikes, amplifying the urgency for more robust defense capabilities. In recent days, drone attacks in Ukrainian cities like Nikopol and Odesa have underscored the ongoing threat faced by civilians amid the protracted war.
