The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have recently revealed that a man charged with murder following a daylight shooting in Toronto is a former police officer. Michaelo Markicevic, 67, was charged with second-degree murder in relation to the fatal incident that occurred in a North York park on April 30, 2026. The incident resulted in the death of 47-year-old Daniel Stopnicki, who was found at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds and pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Toronto police responded swiftly to reports of the shooting, arriving at the North York park to find Stopnicki. As investigations unfolded, Markicevic was taken into custody and subsequently charged with the murder shortly afterward. OPP investigations into Markicevic's background revealed his previous affiliation with the Collingwood Police Service in Ontario, where he served as an officer during the 1990s.
Further inquiries by the OPP indicated that Markicevic had resigned from the Collingwood Police Service sometime between 1995 and 1996, prior to the service's amalgamation with the provincial police force. Interestingly, OPP officials noted that they do not possess any records that would suggest Markicevic transitioned to the provincial force following this significant organizational merger.
The case has attracted considerable media attention not only due to the tragic nature of the shooting but also because of the alleged background of the suspect. The implications of a former police officer being involved in such a violent crime raise questions about public safety and the accountability of law enforcement personnel. Community members are left grappling with the shock of the incident, particularly in a location that ordinarily represents a peaceful recreational environment.
The investigation remains active, with police continuing to collect evidence and witness statements as they piece together the events leading up to the shooting. Both the Toronto police and the OPP are working collaboratively to ensure that thorough examinations take place, aiming to provide clarity and transparency in a case that has left many unanswered questions.
As the legal proceedings against Markicevic move forward, there will undoubtedly be further scrutiny on his past, the circumstances of his resignation, and the conditions surrounding the earlier amalgamation of police services. As this situation continues to evolve, the community and law enforcement leaders emphasize the importance of addressing any underlying issues that may impact trust and safety within the region.
