PARIS (AP) – France's Pasteur Institute has announced the successful sequencing of the Andes virus found in a passenger from the MV Hondius cruise ship. The analysis revealed that the virus matched known strains already identified in South America, with no evidence indicating that it has developed characteristics that would make it more transmissible or dangerous. This statement was made by Health Minister Stéphanie Rist on X, indicating that the currently analyzed virus aligns with those already monitored in South America and that there is no sign of emerging forms posing heightened risks.
The genomic analysis conducted by the Pasteur Institute confirmed that the virus detected in the French passenger matches samples collected from other individuals aboard the cruise ship. Furthermore, it demonstrates about 97% similarity to existing Andes virus strains circulating in South America, particularly those associated with rodents. Jean-Claude Manuguerra, who oversees the Environment and Infectious Risk unit at Pasteur, mentioned that the variations observed are likely due to natural viral evolution and do not seem to impact the virus's overall characteristics detected among travelers.
The French passenger tested positive for the virus after her journey on the MV Hondius. Reports indicate she has been receiving treatment in Paris and was previously reported to be in serious condition. The outbreak aboard the cruise ship has resulted in a total of 11 reported cases, with nine confirmed. Tragically, three individuals, including a Dutch couple believed to be the first infected while visiting South America, have succumbed to the virus.
The Pasteur Institute's findings underscore the importance of genomic surveillance in understanding viral behavior and patterns. Health Minister Rist highlighted that the sequencing work aids in the comprehensive monitoring of viral health impacts. Additionally, she announced that the gathered data will be shared with the international scientific community to foster collaboration and enhance public health responses to emerging infectious diseases.
The ongoing investigation into this outbreak aims to provide clearer insights into the transmission dynamics and the overall health risks associated with the Andes virus. Authorities continue to emphasize caution and health monitoring in relation to any potential cases linked to the cruise ship, while stressing the importance of community awareness and preventive measures.
