JERUSALEM (AP) – A Palestinian man, identified as 32-year-old Mahmoud Al-Amleh, succumbed to his injuries on Monday after being shot by Israeli soldiers while attempting to cross the barrier between the occupied West Bank and Israel in search of work. This incident marks the second fatality of a Palestinian trying to cross for employment within a week, highlighting ongoing tensions in the region.

According to the Ramallah-based Health Ministry, Al-Amleh was shot on Sunday morning in Beit Ula, a village located south of the West Bank near Hebron. Paramedics quickly transported him to a hospital in Hebron for emergency surgery, but efforts to save him proved unsuccessful.

Hamdan Al-Amleh, a cousin of the victim, revealed to The Associated Press that Mahmoud was part of a group of workers who were attempting to enter Israel for job opportunities. The precarious economic situation in the West Bank has driven many Palestinians to seek employment in Israel despite the risks involved.

The Israeli military confirmed that troops fired at Palestinians, injuring one, during the incident. According to the military’s statement, the soldiers acted because the individuals were suspected of damaging the barrier while trying to cross. The military emphasized that firing at such suspects falls within standard procedure for apprehensions. This strategy raises significant questions about the rules of engagement and the safety of civilians in the area.

This deadly shooting follows another similar incident less than a week prior, where another Palestinian was killed while trying to cross the barrier for work purposes. Prior to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, tens of thousands of Palestinians held permits to work in Israel; however, following the attack by Hamas-led militants on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, Israel suspended the majority of those permits. The fallout from this suspension has led to a drastic increase in unemployment and economic hardship within the West Bank, causing many Palestinians to undertake the risky journey into Israel illegally in search of menial jobs.

As of May 11, the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that Israeli forces or settlers have killed at least 47 Palestinians in the West Bank during the year. Specifically, from October 7, 2023, OCHA indicated that 17 Palestinians had been killed and over 290 others injured while attempting to cross the barrier in search of work. These statistics underscore the severity of the ongoing conflict and the dire humanitarian implications for the Palestinian population in the region.

This recent series of events underscores the volatile situation in the territories and highlights the desperate measures many Palestinians are taking amid economic struggles and heightened militarization in the West Bank. The ongoing conflict continues to put civilians at risk, raising urgent calls for accountability and a reevaluation of policies affecting the lives and safety of those in the region.
