Trump expressed enthusiasm for construction, stating that D.C. is "looking beautiful" due to the efforts he has overseen. He highlighted that his plans include renovations to the World War II Memorial's fountain and improvements to 28 other fountains around the city. Individual features of the renovation were also discussed, such as steam cleaning the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which he claimed had been painted with "American flag blue" and cleaned of excess garbage.
In addition, Trump recounted his experience from the 1970s and ’80s, noting, "I built hundreds of pools," and expressed affection for Olympic-sized swimming pools. He noted that construction crews had removed over ten dumpsters of debris to enhance the area and mentioned that he is aiming to complete the renovations by Independence Day, despite some delays caused by recent rains in Washington.
Trump delved into specifics when discussing power-washing techniques, contrasting sandblasting with pebble-blasting, which he described as "a bigger version of sand." He assured that crews were using advanced rubber technology to prevent leaks. Furthermore, he claimed responsibility for the renovation of Lafayette Park, which is situated across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House, where broken brick walkways were said to be an "embarrassment."
Throughout the meeting, Cabinet members maintained a level of attentiveness, with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick often nodding in agreement. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum also engaged when prompted. Notably, the president had limited speaking time for Cabinet members to expedite discussions, referencing previous meetings that extended for multiple hours.
Trump's construction update constituted an eighth of the 80-minute meeting, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth guiding the focus back towards national security after Trump's remarks.
