LONDON (AP) - Counterterrorism detectives in Edinburgh, Scotland, are currently investigating a series of attacks that left five individuals injured in what appears to be targeted violence against Muslims. The incidents occurred late on Friday evening, prompting swift police action.

Police Scotland reported the arrest of a 36-year-old man in connection with the attacks, which were reported in both the west and north areas of the city. Among the victims are five men, with two aged 22 years and the others aged 24, 27, and 39. While a range of injuries was reported, three of the injured men required hospital treatment; however, none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

The charity Muslim Engagement and Development has indicated that several of the injured individuals are part of the Muslim community. Additionally, the Scottish Association of Mosques disclosed that two of the victims were assaulted after attending prayers at their local mosque, highlighting the religious context of the attacks.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the violence, asserting that the suspect “appears to be motivated by anti-Muslim hatred.” He expressed his commitment to ensuring that such acts will be met with the full force of the law in a social media statement, emphasizing the community's need for safety and justice.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood also expressed her horror at the incidents, stating, “There is no place for hatred and violence against Muslims,” and reaffirmed her belief in the values of tolerance that characterize British society.

The Muslim Council of Britain echoed these sentiments, expressing concern and nervousness within the Muslim community as a direct consequence of political discourse that vilifies entire communities. The council called for vigilance and a rejection of divisive rhetoric.

In response to the incident, Police Scotland's Assistant Chief Constable Catriona Paton described the attacks as “shocking” and assured that officers are receiving support from Counter Terrorism Policing. She emphasized the importance of community solidarity, stating, “There is no place for racism or faith-based hate in a Scotland, which is at its best when we stand together.”

Eyewitness accounts and social media footage captured during the incident depicted a shirtless man wielding a long weapon while causing damage to a restaurant door. Another clip showed him on the ground, shouting about “protecting the country” as a police officer restrained him.

Overall, the attacks have raised significant concerns regarding safety and community relations, particularly in light of the statements from officials and community organizations. The ongoing investigation will focus on understanding the motivations behind the assaults and ensuring justice for the affected individuals.
